Building the modal passive
Use a finite modal verb plus Partizip II (past participle) and werden. The modal changes to match the subject; werden stays in the infinitive. In a statement, the modal is in second position and the participle plus werden closes the main clause.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular subject | subject + modal + ... + Partizip II + werden | Das Foto darf gezeigt werden. |
| Plural subject | plural subject + plural modal + ... + Partizip II + werden | Die Fotos dürfen gezeigt werden. |
| Yes/no question | modal + subject + ... + Partizip II + werden? | Muss jedes Kind fotografiert werden? |
Permission, possibility and obligation
Choose dürfen for permission, können for possibility and müssen for a requirement. For English 'must not', use dürfen nicht—not müssen nicht, which means 'does not have to'.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Permission | darf + Partizip II + werden | Das Foto darf gezeigt werden. |
| Limited permission | darf nur + ... + Partizip II + werden | Das Foto darf nur für das Klassenalbum verwendet werden. |

| Possibility | kann + Partizip II + werden | Das Bild kann entfernt werden. |
