Describing the way we do things in German

Use descriptive phrases such as mit frischem Mut (with fresh courage) and aus dickem Karton (from thick cardboard) to make everyday explanations more precise. Without an article, adjectives in the dative take strong endings: -em, -er or -en.

What you'll learn

  • Describe how something is done using article-free dative phrases.
  • Choose -em for masculine and neuter nouns, -er for feminine nouns and -en for plural nouns.
  • Add the dative plural noun ending -n where required.

German phrases for describing the way we do things

  • Mit frischem Mut versuche ich den schwierigen Teil noch einmal.

With fresh courage, I try the difficult part again.

Mut is masculine: without an article, the dative adjective is frischem.

  • Mit guter Zusammenarbeit können wir das lösen.

We can solve this with good teamwork.

Zusammenarbeit is feminine, so the adjective takes -er: guter.

  • Mit ruhiger Hand kannst du die winzigen Linien zeichnen.

With a steady hand, you can draw the tiny lines.

Mit ruhiger Hand is the natural German expression for 'with a steady hand.' Hand is feminine, giving ruhiger.

  • Die Tasche ist aus festem Stoff.

The bag is made from strong fabric.

Aus takes the dative. Stoff is masculine, giving festem.

  • Aus dickem Karton können wir eine Rampe bauen.

We can make a ramp from thick cardboard.

Karton is masculine, so the article-free dative form is dickem Karton.

  • Mit klaren Worten kannst du deine Idee erklären.

With clear words, you can explain your idea.

The adjective takes plural -en. Worte gains the dative plural -n: Worten.

  • Die Glocke läutet in regelmäßigen Abständen.

The bell rings at regular intervals.

In regelmäßigen Abständen is a set expression using the dative plural: Abstände becomes Abständen.

  • Mit kleinen Schritten können wir unser Ziel erreichen.

With small steps, we can reach our goal.

The adjective takes -en, and Schritte gains -n: mit kleinen Schritten.
