What had happened earlier in German
Use the Plusquamperfekt (past perfect) to explain what had already happened before another past event. It helps make the background and order of a story clear.
What you'll learn
- Describe an event completed before another past event.
- Form the Plusquamperfekt with hatte or war plus a familiar past participle.
- Use earlier events to explain situations in a past story.

One step further back in the past
Use the Plusquamperfekt for an action completed before another past event or situation. The main story stays in the past; the Plusquamperfekt supplies the earlier background.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier action | Plusquamperfekt | Ich hatte den Schlüssel verloren. — I had lost the key. |
— I could not open the box. |
Forming the Plusquamperfekt
Keep the past participle and auxiliary choice you already use in the Perfekt. Change haben to its past form hatte, or sein to its past form war, matching the subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With haben | hatte + Partizip II | Ich habe gegessen. → Ich hatte gegessen. |
Placing the two verb parts
Use the familiar sentence patterns with the new past auxiliary. In a main clause, the finite auxiliary is in second position and the participle comes at the end. In the dependent clauses in this unit, the participle comes immediately before the final auxiliary.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Main clause | subject + hatte/war + … + Partizip II | Wir hatten den Bus verpasst. |
| Earlier background in a dependent clause | … |
| Earlier action describing an answer | … + Partizip II + hattest | …, die du vorher geschrieben hattest. |
