One Step Further in German

Use nachdem (“after”) to link a completed step to what happens next. These everyday routines use the Perfekt in the nachdem clause and the present tense for the following action.

What you'll learn

  • Describe everyday routines in a clear sequence.
  • Use nachdem with the Perfekt to mark a completed earlier action.
  • Place verbs correctly when a nachdem clause comes first.
  • Choose haben or sein to form the Perfekt.

German phrases for one step further

  • Nachdem du deine Hausaufgaben erledigt hast, steckst du die Mappe in deine Tasche.

After you have finished your homework, you put the folder in your bag.

Erledigt hast means “have finished.” The auxiliary hast comes at the end of the nachdem clause.

  • Nachdem wir die Geschichte gelesen haben, sprechen wir über deine Lieblingsstelle.

After we have read the story, we talk about your favourite part.

Deine Lieblingsstelle is your favourite part or passage in the story.

  • Nachdem du dir die Hände gewaschen hast, hilfst du mir, deine Brotdose zu packen.

After you have washed your hands, you help me pack your lunchbox.

German commonly uses sich die Hände waschen for washing your own hands: du wäschst dir die Hände.

  • Nachdem du den Stundenplan für morgen überprüft hast, suchst du die Bücher aus, die du brauchst.

After you have checked tomorrow's timetable, you choose the books you need.

Aussuchen means “to choose.” In the main clause, it separates: du suchst … aus.

  • Nachdem dein Freund nach Hause gegangen ist, räumen wir das Spiel zusammen auf.

After your friend has gone home, we tidy up the game together.

Gehen forms its Perfekt with sein: gegangen ist. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.

  • Nachdem du deine Münzen gezählt hast, schreibst du den Gesamtbetrag in dein Notizbuch.

After you have counted your coins, you write the total in your notebook.

Der Gesamtbetrag is the total amount of money.

  • Nachdem wir beim Sportverein angekommen sind, wechselst du deine Schuhe.

After we have arrived at the sports club, you change your shoes.

Ankommen forms its Perfekt with sein: angekommen sind. Beim is short for bei dem.

  • Nachdem du dir die Zähne geputzt hast, lese ich dir noch ein Kapitel vor.

After you have brushed your teeth, I read you another chapter.

Vorlesen means “to read aloud.” Dir tells us who is being read to; noch ein Kapitel means “another chapter.”

Nachdem: one completed step before the next

Nachdem introduces the action that is completed first. For the routines here, use the Perfekt in that clause and the present tense in the main clause. This presents the next step as part of a routine, rather than telling a past story.

UseFormExample
Completed earlier actionnachdem + subject + … + past participle + haben/seinNachdem du deine Münzen gezählt hast, …
Following actionpresent-tense main clause… schreibst du den Gesamtbetrag in dein Notizbuch.

Word order and the comma

In a nachdem clause, the conjugated verb goes last. When this clause comes first, it fills the first position of the sentence, so the main clause starts with its conjugated verb, followed by the subject. Separate the clauses with a comma.

UseFormExample
Auxiliary at the endpast participle + conjugated auxiliaryNachdem wir die Geschichte gelesen haben, …
Main-clause verb before the subjectNachdem …, + verb + subject + …Nachdem wir die Geschichte gelesen haben, sprechen wir über deine Lieblingsstelle.
Separable main-clause verbconjugated verb + … + separated prefixNachdem dein Freund nach Hause gegangen ist, räumen wir das Spiel zusammen auf.

Perfekt with haben or sein

Most verbs in these phrases use haben. Gehen and ankommen use sein because they describe movement from one place to another. The auxiliary agrees with the subject.

UseFormExample
With habendu … hast; wir … habenNachdem du dir die Hände gewaschen hast, hilfst du mir.
With seindein Freund … ist; wir … sindNachdem wir beim Sportverein angekommen sind, wechselst du deine Schuhe.
