Better Everyday Swaps in German

Help your child choose thoughtful everyday alternatives. Use statt ... zu to say what someone can do instead of another action.

What you'll learn

  • Suggest practical alternatives in a friendly way.
  • Use statt ... zu when the same person or group does both actions.
  • Form zu-infinitives with ordinary and separable verbs.

German phrases for better everyday swaps

  • Du kannst ein Buch ausleihen, statt ein neues zu kaufen.

You can borrow a book instead of buying a new one.

Ein neues means 'a new one': Buch is understood, so it does not need to be repeated.

  • Wir können deinen Rucksack reparieren, statt ihn wegzuwerfen.

We can repair your backpack instead of throwing it away.

Ihn refers back to the masculine noun Rucksack. Wegwerfen becomes wegzuwerfen.

  • Versuch, deinen Freund direkt zu fragen, statt zu raten, wie er sich fühlt.

Try asking your friend directly instead of guessing how they feel.

Versuch is an informal singular command. For a female friend, use deine Freundin and wie sie sich fühlt.

  • Du kannst eine kurze Pause machen, statt das Projekt aufzugeben.

You can take a short break instead of giving up on the project.

German uses eine Pause machen for 'take a break.' Aufgeben becomes aufzugeben.

  • Wir können wiederverwendbare Flaschen einpacken, statt Getränke in Plastikflaschen zu kaufen.

We can pack reusable bottles instead of buying drinks in plastic bottles.

Einpacken means 'to pack.' After können, it stays in the infinitive without zu.

  • Bitte räum deine Kleidung weg, statt sie auf dem Boden liegen zu lassen.

Please put your clothes away instead of leaving them on the floor.

Wegräumen splits in the command: räum ... weg. In liegen zu lassen, zu goes before lassen, not liegen.

  • Du könntest deinen Freund zu einem Spaziergang einladen, statt den ganzen Nachmittag online zu chatten.

You could invite your friend for a walk instead of chatting online all afternoon.

Du könntest makes a gentle suggestion. Den ganzen Nachmittag means 'all afternoon.'

  • Wir können heute Abend die Aufgaben für morgen planen, statt uns morgens abzuhetzen.

We can plan tomorrow's tasks tonight instead of rushing in the morning.

Sich abhetzen means 'to rush around.' With wir, use uns; abhetzen becomes abzuhetzen.

Key words

ausleihen

to borrow; to lend

Here, ein Buch ausleihen means 'to borrow a book.' Context shows whether someone borrows or lends.

wegwerfen

to throw away

A separable verb: weg + werfen. Its zu-infinitive is wegzuwerfen.

raten

to guess

Here it means guessing rather than asking. In other contexts, it can also mean 'to advise.'

wiederverwendbar

reusable

Before a noun, it takes an adjective ending: wiederverwendbare Flaschen.

die Kleidung

clothes; clothing

Kleidung is singular in German, even when it refers to several items.

sich abhetzen

to rush around

This suggests a stressful hurry. The reflexive pronoun changes with the subject: du hetzt dich ab; wir hetzen uns ab.

Replacing an action with statt ... zu

Statt ... zu means 'instead of doing something.' The main clause gives the suggested action; the statt-clause names the action to replace. Put a comma before statt and the zu-infinitive at the end of its clause.

UseFormExample
Basic patternMain clause, statt + other information + zu-infinitive.Du kannst ein Buch ausleihen, statt ein neues zu kaufen.
With a requestBitte + command, statt + other information + zu-infinitive.Bitte reparier die Tasche, statt sie wegzuwerfen.

One shared subject

The understood subject of the statt-clause is the same as the subject of the main clause. Do not repeat du or wir inside the infinitive clause. In a command, the subject du is understood.

UseFormExample
Shared duDu kannst ..., statt ... zu ...Du kannst eine Pause machen, statt aufzugeben.
Shared wirWir können ..., statt ... zu ...Wir können die Tasche reparieren, statt sie wegzuwerfen.
Understood du in a commandCommand, statt ... zu ...Frag direkt, statt zu raten.

Where zu goes

With an ordinary verb, put zu before the infinitive. With a separable verb, insert zu between the prefix and the verb. Modal verbs such as können take an infinitive without zu in the main clause, but the statt-clause still needs zu.

UseFormExample
Ordinary verbkaufen → zu kaufenWir können Wasser mitnehmen, statt Getränke zu kaufen.
Separable verbaufgeben → aufzugebenDu kannst Hilfe holen, statt aufzugeben.
Reflexive separable verbsich abhetzen → uns abzuhetzen with wirWir können früher anfangen, statt uns abzuhetzen.
Two-verb expressionliegen lassen → liegen zu lassenBitte räum die Kleidung weg, statt sie auf dem Boden liegen zu lassen.
