When We Were Younger in German

Use childhood memories to connect your own experiences with your child's life. These phrases practise regular verbs in the Präteritum, a past tense commonly used in written stories. In everyday conversation, German speakers often use the Perfekt for these actions instead.

What you'll learn

  • Share memories about childhood friends, hobbies and routines.
  • Form the Präteritum of regular verbs using -te- and personal endings.
  • Add the extra e needed in forms such as wartete and arbeitete.
  • Use als for a past childhood period and ask questions about past activities.

German phrases for when we were younger

  • Als ich so alt war wie du, spielte ich jeden Samstag Basketball.

When I was your age, I played basketball every Saturday.

So alt wie du means 'as old as you'. The als-clause comes first, so the main clause begins with spielte ich.

  • Mein bester Freund wohnte nebenan.

My best friend lived next door.

Wohnen becomes wohnte. For a female best friend, say meine beste Freundin.

  • Wir warteten oft zusammen vor dem Jugendclub.

We often waited outside the youth club together.

Warten adds an extra e before -te-. Vor dem Jugendclub means 'outside/in front of the youth club'.

  • Meine Schwester arbeitete nach der Schule an ihrer Modelleisenbahn.

My sister worked on her model railway after school.

Arbeiten becomes arbeitete. An etwas arbeiten means 'to work on something' and takes the dative here: an ihrer Modelleisenbahn.

  • Sammeltest du Sticker, als du jünger warst?

Did you collect stickers when you were younger?

German does not add a word for 'did': put sammeltest before du. Warst is an irregular past form of sein.

  • Du und dein Cousin bautet in allen Ferien Modelle aus Pappe.

You and your cousin built cardboard models every holiday.

Du und dein Cousin takes the ihr verb form: bautet. Ferien means school holidays; for a female cousin, use deine Cousine.

  • Ich lernte mit zwei Schulfreunden Gitarre spielen.

I learned the guitar with two school friends.

Gitarre spielen means 'to play the guitar'. Only lernte carries the past tense; spielen stays in the infinitive.

  • Meine Freunde kauften mit ihrem Taschengeld Comics.

My friends bought comics with their pocket money.

The plural subject meine Freunde takes kauften. Mit takes the dative: mit ihrem Taschengeld.

Key words

nebenan

next door

An adverb: it needs no article or adjective ending.

der Jugendclub

youth club

Plural: die Jugendclubs.

die Modelleisenbahn

model railway

A compound noun; its gender comes from the final word, die Eisenbahn.

Sticker sammeln

Regular Präteritum: -te- and personal endings

For most regular verbs, remove -en to find the stem, then add the ending below. For sammeln, remove only -n: sammel- → sammelte. The ich and er/sie/es forms are identical.

UseFormExample
ichstem + -teIch spielte Basketball.
dustem + -testDu spieltest Basketball.
er / sie / esstem + -teSie spielte Basketball.
wirstem + -tenWir spielten Basketball.
ihrstem + -tetIhr spieltet Basketball.
sie / Siestem + -tenSie spielten Basketball.

The extra e in wartete and arbeitete

Regular verbs whose stems end in -t or -d insert an e before the past-tense endings. This makes them easier to pronounce: wart- + e + te → wartete. Keep this extra e in every person.

UseFormExample
ich / er / sie / eswartete / arbeiteteMeine Schwester arbeitete an ihrer Modelleisenbahn.
duwartetest / arbeitetestDu wartetest vor dem Jugendclub.
wir / sie / Siewarteten / arbeitetenWir warteten zusammen.
ihrwartetet / arbeitetetIhr arbeitetet zusammen.

Talking about childhood with als

Use als for a particular time or period in the past, including childhood. The conjugated verb goes at the end of the als-clause. If that clause comes first, the main-clause verb comes immediately after the comma. War and warst are irregular forms of sein, not regular -te- forms.

UseFormExample
Past-time clause firstAls + subject + ... + verb, main verb + subject + ...Als ich jünger war, sammelte ich Sticker.
Past-time clause lastMain clause, als + subject + ... + verbIch sammelte Sticker, als ich jünger war.

Questions and plural subjects

In yes/no questions, move the conjugated verb to the beginning; German needs no equivalent of 'did'. A subject made up of du and another person takes the ihr form.

UseFormExample
Yes/no questionPast-tense verb + subject + ...?Sammeltest du Sticker?
You and another persondu und ... → ihr formDu und dein Cousin bautet Modelle.
