Remember That Afternoon in German

Remember an ordinary family afternoon and its small achievements. These phrases use regular verbs in the Präteritum, a past tense common in written stories and recollections. In everyday conversation, German speakers usually use the Perfekt for these actions.

What you'll learn

  • Describe shared family memories using regular verbs in the Präteritum.
  • Choose the correct personal ending after the past-tense marker -te-.
  • Use the extra e in forms such as wartete and arbeitete.
  • Recognise ihr verb forms when addressing your child and another person together.

German phrases for remember that afternoon

  • Ich wartete neben dem Schultor auf dich.

I waited for you beside the school gate.

Warten auf means 'to wait for'. Use auf dich for 'for you'. Wartete includes an extra e before -te.

  • Du packtest deine Schultasche ohne Hilfe.

You packed your school bag without any help.

Packtest consists of pack- + -te- + -st. Ohne Hilfe means 'without help'.

  • Wir übten zusammen deine neuen Lesewörter.

We practised your new reading words together.

Lesewörter are words used for reading practice. With wir, üben becomes übten.

  • Deine Schwester malte ein Bild für deine Lehrerin.

Your sister painted a picture for your teacher.

Deine Schwester takes the same verb form as sie: malte. Lehrerin refers to a female teacher; for a male teacher, use für deinen Lehrer.

  • Du und dein Freund spieltet im Garten.

You and your friend played in the garden.

Du und dein Freund corresponds to ihr, so use spieltet. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.

  • Die Kinder sammelten auf dem Heimweg Blätter.

The children collected leaves on the way home.

Die Kinder is plural, so use sammelten. Auf dem Heimweg means 'on the way home'.

  • Ich arbeitete am Küchentisch, während du deine Hausaufgaben machtest.

I worked at the kitchen table during your homework time.

German naturally expresses this as 'while you did your homework'. After während, the verb machtest goes at the end of its clause.

  • Wir suchten nach dem Abendessen deine Fußballschuhe.

We searched for your football boots after dinner.

Suchen takes a direct object: deine Fußballschuhe. Here, nach belongs to nach dem Abendessen, meaning 'after dinner'.

Regular Präteritum: stem + -te- + personal ending

For most regular verbs ending in -en, remove -en to find the stem. Add -te-, then the personal ending. Ich and er/sie/es have no additional ending. Unlike the Perfekt, this tense does not need a helping verb.

UseFormExample
ichspiel- + -te → spielteIch spielte im Garten.
duspiel- + -te- + -st → spieltestDu spieltest im Garten.
er / sie / esspiel- + -te → spielteDeine Schwester spielte im Garten.

The extra e in warten and arbeiten

Regular verbs with stems ending in -t or -d insert an extra e before -te- to make pronunciation easier. Warten has the stem wart-, and arbeiten has the stem arbeit-. The personal endings remain the same.
