Two Good Options in German

Use entweder ... oder (“either ... or”) to offer two clear alternatives while giving your child room to choose. This pattern can link names, objects, places, times or complete main clauses.

What you'll learn

  • Offer two alternatives with entweder ... oder.
  • Join matching words and phrases without repeating the whole sentence.
  • Use correct verb order when joining two main clauses.
  • Discuss everyday choices about plans, responsibilities and activities.

German phrases for two good options

  • Du kannst dieses Wochenende entweder Sam oder Alex einladen.

You can invite either Sam or Alex this weekend.

Entweder ... oder links the two names. With kannst, the infinitive einladen goes at the end.

  • Wir können uns entweder vor der Bibliothek oder am Sportzentrum treffen.

We can meet either outside the library or at the sports centre.

The alternatives are two location phrases. Vor der Bibliothek means “in front of the library”; am is short for an dem.

  • Entweder räumst du jetzt deinen Schreibtisch auf, oder du machst das nach dem Mittagessen.

Either you tidy your desk now, or you do it after lunch.

These are two complete main clauses. In the first, entweder is followed by the verb and then the subject: entweder räumst du.

  • Für dein Projekt kannst du entweder ein Poster oder ein kurzes Video machen.

For your project, you can make either a poster or a short video.

The shared verb machen applies to both objects. Kurzes has the adjective ending needed with ein Video.

  • Entweder bringe ich dich zum Training, oder du fährst mit deinem Freund mit dem Fahrrad.

Either I take you to practice, or you cycle with your friend.

Zum Training means “to practice.” Use mit deiner Freundin if the friend is female.

  • Du kannst deine Bildschirmzeit entweder vor dem Abendessen oder danach nutzen.

You can use your screen time either before dinner or afterwards.

Entweder ... oder links two time expressions. Danach refers back to dinner.

  • Wir können die Übernachtungsparty entweder diesen Samstag oder nächsten Freitag machen.

We can have the sleepover either this Saturday or next Friday.

Diesen Samstag and nächsten Freitag are time expressions without a preposition. Both use the accusative.

  • Entweder kochen wir zusammen, oder wir verwenden die Reste von gestern.

Either we cook together, or we use the leftovers from yesterday.

After entweder, the order is kochen wir. After oder, the second clause uses ordinary subject–verb order: wir verwenden.

Link matching alternatives

Place entweder before the first alternative and oder before the second. Both alternatives should have the same role in the sentence. Shared words, such as the subject or verb, do not need repeating.

UseFormExample
Namesentweder + name + oder + nameDu kannst entweder Sam oder Alex einladen.
Objectsentweder + object + oder + objectDu kannst entweder ein Poster oder ein kurzes Video machen.
Placesentweder + location phrase + oder + location phraseWir treffen uns entweder vor der Bibliothek oder am Sportzentrum.
Timesentweder + time expression + oder + time expressionDu kannst entweder vor dem Abendessen oder danach spielen.

Link two main clauses

A useful pattern puts entweder first, followed by the conjugated verb and then the subject. Oder does not change the word order of the following main clause. Other placements of entweder are possible, but this pattern is easy to reuse.

UseFormExample
First clauseEntweder + conjugated verb + subject + restEntweder kochen wir zusammen ...
Second clauseoder + subject + conjugated verb + rest... oder wir verwenden die Reste von gestern.
Separable verbEntweder + conjugated verb stem + subject + rest + prefixEntweder räumst du jetzt deinen Schreibtisch auf, oder du machst das später.

Commas and case

Do not put a comma between alternative words or phrases. Between two complete main clauses joined by oder, a comma is optional and can improve readability. Entweder ... oder does not determine case; the surrounding sentence does.

UseFormExample
No comma between phrasesentweder phrase A oder phrase BWir kommen entweder diesen Samstag oder nächsten Freitag.
Optional comma between main clausesEntweder main clause, oder main clauseEntweder komme ich zu dir, oder du kommst zu mir.
Keep the required casemit + dative in both alternativesDu kannst entweder mit deinem Bruder oder mit deiner Schwester spielen.
