Two Gentle Options in German

Use entweder ... oder (“either ... or”) to offer two everyday possibilities. These phrases help you talk gently with your child about care, rest and family plans.

What you'll learn

  • Offer two alternatives using entweder ... oder.
  • Join words, phrases and complete main clauses.
  • Use correct word order when entweder begins a sentence.
  • Recognize shared sentence parts that do not need repeating.

German phrases for two gentle options

  • Entweder Mama oder Papa wird dir dein Fläschchen geben.

Either Mum or Dad will give you your bottle.

Entweder ... oder joins two possible subjects. Wird is singular because either parent would act individually.

  • Wir können entweder auf dem Sofa oder im Sessel kuscheln.

We can cuddle either on the sofa or in the armchair.

The alternatives are two locations. Im means in dem; both location phrases use the dative.

  • Für dein Nickerchen kannst du entweder den gestreiften Schlafstrampler oder den einfarbigen anziehen.

For your nap, you can wear either the striped sleepsuit or the plain one.

Den einfarbigen means “the plain one.” Schlafstrampler is understood and does not need repeating.

  • Entweder gehen wir jetzt mit dem Kinderwagen spazieren, oder wir warten bis nach deinem Nickerchen.

Either we go for a pram walk now, or we wait until after your nap.

Two complete main clauses are joined. In this pattern, entweder comes directly before the conjugated verb gehen.

  • Ich packe entweder zwei kleine Lätzchen oder ein großes Lätzchen ein.

I will pack either two small bibs or one large bib.

Einpacken is separable: packe comes near the beginning and ein at the end. German present tense naturally expresses this planned action.

  • Wir können entweder dein Tierbuch oder deine Familienfotos anschauen.

We can look at either your animal book or your family photos.

Both alternatives are objects of anschauen. The infinitive anschauen comes at the end after können.

  • Entweder kommt Oma zu uns, oder wir besuchen sie nach dem Mittagessen.

Either Grandma comes here, or we visit her after lunch.

Zu uns means “to our place.” After oder, the second main clause has normal subject–verb order: wir besuchen.

  • Nach deinem Bad werde ich dir entweder etwas vorsingen oder eine kurze Geschichte vorlesen.

After your bath, I will either sing to you or read you a short story.

Werde ich dir is shared by both alternatives. Vorsingen means to sing something to someone; vorlesen means to read aloud.

Use the dative for the listener: Ich lese dir vor means “I read aloud to you.”

Joining matching alternatives

Entweder ... oder can join subjects, objects, location phrases or actions. Keep the alternatives parallel: both should fill the same role in the sentence. Do not normally put a comma between alternative words or phrases.

UseFormExample
Subjectsentweder + subject + oder + subjectEntweder Mama oder Papa gibt dir dein Fläschchen.
Objectsentweder + object + oder + objectIch packe entweder zwei kleine Lätzchen oder ein großes Lätzchen ein.
Location phrasesentweder + location phrase + oder + location phraseWir können entweder auf dem Sofa oder im Sessel kuscheln.

Joining complete main clauses

Each main clause has its own subject and conjugated verb. When entweder occupies the first position, the verb follows it, then the subject. Oder does not change the word order of the following clause. A comma between two complete main clauses is optional; here it helps separate the choices.

UseFormExample
Entweder in first positionEntweder + verb + subject + ..., oder + subject + verb + ...Entweder kommt Oma zu uns, oder wir besuchen sie.
Entweder inside the first clausesubject + verb + entweder + ..., oder + subject + verb + ...Wir gehen entweder jetzt spazieren, oder wir warten noch.

Sharing sentence parts

When both alternatives share a subject, modal verb or other sentence part, you usually say it only once. With können or werden, the action verbs remain infinitives. You can also leave out a repeated noun when its meaning is clear.

UseFormExample
Shared modal verbsubject + können + entweder + action + oder + actionWir können entweder kuscheln oder ein Buch anschauen.
Shared future auxiliarysubject + werden + entweder + action + oder + actionIch werde entweder singen oder eine Geschichte vorlesen.
Leaving out a repeated nounentweder + article + adjective + noun + oder + article + adjectiveDu kannst entweder den gestreiften Schlafstrampler oder den einfarbigen anziehen.
