Imagining what pocket money could do in German

Imagine together what a little pocket money could buy, how much to save and what might be left. Use würde plus an infinitive to talk about imagined choices rather than firm plans.

What you'll learn

  • Ask what someone would buy or choose.
  • Describe imagined spending and saving choices with würde plus an infinitive.
  • Link an imagined condition and its outcome using wenn.

German phrases for imagining what pocket money could do

  • Was würdest du mit fünf Pfund kaufen?

What would you buy with five pounds?

Place würdest after the question word and kaufen at the end.

I would save half for something special.

Würde ... sparen describes an imagined saving choice.

  • Würdest du alles für diese Zeitschrift ausgeben?

Would you spend everything on that magazine?

Start a yes/no question with würdest. The infinitive ausgeben stays together at the end.

  • Ich würde zuerst die Preise vergleichen.

I would compare the prices first.

Würde ... vergleichen presents an imagined action.

If I bought that key ring, I would have nothing left.

The wenn clause ends in kaufen würde. The outcome then begins with würde.

We would put the rest in your money box.

Use würden with wir; tun is the final infinitive.

  • Würde dein Bruder sich dasselbe aussuchen?

Would your brother choose the same thing?

Use würde for dein Bruder, just as for er.

  • Ich würde bis nächste Woche warten.

I would wait until next week.

Würde ... warten makes this an imagined choice, not a firm commitment.

Imagined choices: würde plus infinitive

Use a form of würde plus an infinitive to say what someone would do in an imagined situation. In a statement, the würde form is in second position and the infinitive goes at the end.

UseFormExample

Questions about imagined choices

For a yes/no question, put the würde form first. With a question word such as was, put the würde form immediately after it. Keep the infinitive at the end.

UseFormExample
Yes/no questionWürdest + du + ... + infinitive?Würdest du alles ausgeben?
Question with wasWas + würdest + du + ... + infinitive?Was würdest du kaufen?

Imagined conditions with wenn

Use wenn for an imagined 'if'. In this pattern, the wenn clause ends with the infinitive followed by the würde form. If that clause comes first, put a comma after it and start the outcome with its würde form. English often uses a past form here ('if I bought'), but the situation is imagined, not past.

UseFormExample
Condition firstWenn + subject + ... + infinitive + würde form, würde form + subject + ... + infinitive.
