Review: contrast and time

These linking words send the finite verb to the end of their clause. If that clause comes first, the main clause starts with its finite verb. Use als for one past event or period and wenn for repeated past occasions.

UseFormExample
ContrastobwohlObwohl ich nervös war, erklärte ich meine Idee klar.
One past occasionalsAls ich es zum ersten Mal versuchte, dachte ich an deine Hilfe.
Repeated past occasions(immer) wennImmer wenn wir übten, wusste ich ein bisschen mehr.

Immediate next stepsobaldSobald ich bereit war, versuchte ich es.
Continuing duration or conditionsolangeSolange du Hilfe brauchst, bleibe ich bei dir.

Review: familiar lexical Präteritum

Recall these past forms for reflecting on what happened. The stem changes in dachte, wusste and brachte need particular attention.

wissen → wussteich wusste; du wusstest; er/sie wusste; wir wusstenWir wussten schon viel.

Other familiar formsging; kam; sah; fand; gab; nahmIch kam ins Zimmer, sah die Übersicht und nahm einen Stift.

Review: relative clauses and future commitments

A relative pronoun matches the noun it refers to in gender and number. Its case depends on its role inside the relative clause. Futur I uses a form of werden with an infinitive at the end of the main clause.

UseFormExample
Relative pronoun as subjectnominative: der, die, das; plural dieDas ist der Stift, der gut in der Hand liegt.
Relative pronoun as direct objectaccusative: den, die, das; plural dieDas ist der Stift, den ich mitgebracht habe.
Futur Iwerden + infinitiveIch werde dir die Methode zeigen, die ich entdeckt habe.

Review: adjective endings and place

After a definite or indefinite article in the dative, the adjective ends in -en. Article-free plural adjectives end in -e in the nominative and accusative. With two-way prepositions, distinguish a destination from a position.

UseFormExample
Dative adjective endingsmit dem/einem dicken Stift; mit der/einer breiten Spitze; mit den neuen StiftenDu hast mit einem dicken Stift gearbeitet.
Article-free pluralnominative and accusative: adjective + -eNützliche Beispiele helfen. Ich sammle nützliche Beispiele.
Destinationan, hinter, vor, über, zwischen + accusativeWir hängten die Übersicht an die Wand.
Positionan, hinter, vor, über, zwischen + dativeDie Übersicht hängt an der Wand.

Review: purpose, result and infinitive phrases

Keep purpose separate from result. Damit can connect actions with different subjects; um … zu and ohne … zu normally share the main clause's subject. Dependent zu-infinitives complete verbs such as versuchen, planen, hoffen and vergessen.

UseFormExample
Purpose with a finite clausedamit + subject + … + finite verbWir hängten die Übersicht an die Wand, damit alle sie lesen konnten.
Purpose with the same subjectum … zu + infinitiveWir haben geübt, um besser zu werden.
Actual resultsodass + subject + … + finite verbWir haben geübt, sodass wir uns jetzt sicherer fühlen.
Omitted actionohne … zu + infinitiveIch erklärte die Idee, ohne meine Notizen zu lesen.
Dependent infinitiveversuchen / planen / hoffen / vergessen + zu-infinitiveIch versuchte, die Methode zu erklären.
Separable infinitivesprefix + zu + verbIch versuchte, weiterzumachen, ohne aufzugeben.
