Losing a game without giving up in German

Practise talking kindly about competition and disappointment. Use ohne ... zu to say what someone does without doing another action.

German phrases for losing a game without giving up

  • Können wir das Spiel zu Ende spielen, ohne zu streiten?

    Can we finish the game without arguing?

    The same group, wir, finishes the game and avoids arguing.

  • Du kannst enttäuscht sein, ohne jemandem die Schuld zu geben.

    You can feel disappointed without blaming anyone.

    Jemandem die Schuld geben means to blame someone.

  • Ich möchte meinen Spielzug erklären, ohne dich zu unterbrechen.

    I want to explain my move without interrupting you.

    Ich is the person explaining and the person who avoids interrupting.

  • Sie hat gewonnen, ohne sich über die anderen lustig zu machen.

    She won without making fun of the others.

    Sich über jemanden lustig machen means to make fun of someone.

  • Du hast es weiter versucht, ohne aufzugeben.

    You kept trying without giving up.

    Aufgeben becomes aufzugeben: zu goes between auf and geben.

  • Wir können die Regel nachlesen, ohne von vorne anzufangen.

    We can check the rule without starting again.

    Von vorne anfangen means to start again from the beginning. Anfangen becomes anzufangen.

  • Ich kann ihm gratulieren, ohne Freude vorzuspielen.

    I can congratulate him without pretending to be happy.

    Freude vorspielen means to pretend to feel happy. Vorspielen becomes vorzuspielen.

  • Kannst du das Spiel wegräumen, ohne die Spielfiguren zu werfen?

    Can you put the game away without throwing the pieces?

    Spielfiguren refers to playing pieces, such as pawns or counters.

Without doing something: ohne ... zu

Use ohne ... zu for an action that does not happen alongside the main action. The understood subject is the same in both parts. Do not repeat that subject in the infinitive clause. Separate the clause with a comma.

Separable verbs: put zu inside

With a separable verb, put zu between the prefix and the rest of the infinitive. Write the result as one word at the end of the clause.
