Using ohne ... zu
Ohne ... zu means “without doing.” Use it when the understood subject of the infinitive clause is the same as the subject of the main clause. Do not repeat that subject. Separate the clauses with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Same person | Du kannst ... , ohne ... zu + infinitive. | Du kannst deine Meinung erklären, ohne die anderen Spieler zu beleidigen. |
| Same group | Wir können ... , ohne ... zu + infinitive. | Wir können das Turnier genießen, ohne jedes Spiel zu gewinnen. |
Where zu goes
With most verbs, put zu directly before the infinitive at the end of the clause. With separable verbs, insert zu between the prefix and the verb stem and write everything as one word.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary infinitive | gewinnen → zu gewinnen | Wir können Spaß haben, ohne zu gewinnen. |
| Separable infinitive | aufgeben → aufzugeben | Du kannst ein Spiel verlieren, ohne aufzugeben. |
| Inseparable infinitive | verlassen → zu verlassen | Du kannst eine Pause machen, ohne das Team zu verlassen. |
Reflexive pronouns stay
A reflexive verb still needs its reflexive pronoun in an ohne ... zu clause. The pronoun matches the understood subject: dich for du, uns for wir.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With du | ohne dich zu schämen | Du kannst um Rat fragen, ohne dich zu schämen. |
| With wir | ohne uns zu schämen | Wir können um Rat fragen, ohne uns zu schämen. |
