Keep Going Kindly in German

Use these everyday phrases to encourage patient effort, fair play and kindness. German ohne ... zu clauses describe something someone does not do while doing something else.

What you'll learn

  • Encourage persistence and considerate behaviour in everyday situations.
  • Use ohne ... zu when the same person performs the main action and omits another action.
  • Place zu correctly in separable infinitives such as aufzugeben and mitzunehmen.

German phrases for keep going kindly

  • Du hast das Puzzle zu Ende gemacht, ohne aufzugeben.

You finished the puzzle without giving up.

Aufgeben means “to give up.” In the infinitive clause, zu goes between auf and geben: aufzugeben.

  • Du kannst ein Spiel verlieren, ohne wütend zu werden.

You can lose a match without getting angry.

Wütend werden means “to get angry.” This phrase presents staying calm as something your child can practise.

  • Du hast gewartet, bis du dran warst, ohne jemanden zu unterbrechen.

You waited for your turn without interrupting.

Bis du dran warst means “until it was your turn.” Jemanden unterbrechen means “to interrupt someone.”

  • Wir können über den Spielstand sprechen, ohne jemandem die Schuld zu geben.

We can talk about the score without blaming anyone.

Jemandem die Schuld geben means “to blame someone.” After ohne, jemandem conveys “anyone” here.

  • Du hast die ganze Seite gelesen, ohne eine Zeile auszulassen.

You read the whole page without skipping a line.

Eine Zeile auslassen means “to skip a line.” Auslassen becomes auszulassen after ohne.

  • Du hast das Zimmer verlassen, ohne aufzuräumen.

You left the room without tidying up.

Aufräumen becomes aufzuräumen. Said calmly, this points out an unfinished task rather than criticising the child.

  • Du bist zum Fußball gegangen, ohne deine Wasserflasche mitzunehmen.

You went to football without taking your water bottle along.

Mitnehmen means “to take along” and becomes mitzunehmen. Zum Fußball gehen means “to go to football.”

  • Ich habe dir bei deinen Hausaufgaben geholfen, ohne dir die Antwort zu sagen.

I helped with your homework without telling you the answer.

Both actions refer to ich: I helped, but I did not tell you the answer. Helfen takes the dative: dir.
