Seitdem: from a starting point until now
Seitdem means “since” in time: it introduces when an ongoing situation or change began. Use the Perfekt for a completed starting event, or the present for an activity that began then and continues. The main clause commonly uses the present for what is still true now.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Completed starting event | seitdem + subject + … + participle + finite auxiliary | Ich lese entspannter, seitdem ich die Brille bekommen habe. |
| Activity continuing now | seitdem + subject + … + finite present-tense verb | Ich bemerke mehr Details, seitdem ich die Brille trage. |
Verb position with seitdem
The finite verb—the verb that agrees with the subject—goes last in the seitdem clause. Separate the clauses with a comma. If the seitdem clause comes first, put the main clause's finite verb directly after the comma, before its subject.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Seitdem clause second | main clause, seitdem + subject + … + finite verb | Die Brille sitzt gut, seitdem der Optiker sie angepasst hat. |
| Seitdem clause first | Seitdem + subject + … + finite verb, main-clause finite verb + subject + … | Seitdem der Optiker die Brille angepasst hat, sitzt sie gut. |
