The career you nearly chose in German

Reflect on career paths almost taken using beinahe or fast with the past Konjunktiv II. These constructions describe something that came close to happening but did not, leaving room for reflection without implying that anyone chose the wrong life.

What you'll learn

  • Describe unrealised career turning points with beinahe or fast plus past Konjunktiv II.
  • Choose hätte or wäre according to the verb and place the verb forms correctly.
  • Distinguish a near-event that did not occur from a hypothetical consequence dependent on a condition.
  • Discuss paths not taken without presenting hindsight as an obligation.

German phrases for the career you nearly chose

  • Beinahe hätte ich die Beförderung angenommen, nur um dich nicht zu enttäuschen.

I nearly accepted the promotion just to avoid disappointing you.

Beinahe hätte … angenommen makes clear that the promotion was not accepted.

  • Fast wäre ich in einem Beruf geblieben, an den ich nicht mehr glaubte.

I almost stayed in a profession I'd stopped believing in.

Bleiben takes wäre in this construction. The speaker did not remain in that profession.

  • Beinahe hätten wir einen prestigeträchtigen Titel mit einem erfüllten Leben verwechselt.

We nearly mistook a prestigious title for a satisfying life.

The near-event is the mistaken equation of status with fulfilment; hätten … verwechselt says it was avoided.

  • Fast hätte ich ein einziges furchtbares Vorstellungsgespräch über meine gesamte Zukunft entscheiden lassen.

I almost let one dreadful interview decide my entire future.

With lassen governing another infinitive, the final verb group is entscheiden lassen, not entscheiden gelassen.

  • Beinahe hättest du dir die Arbeit ausgeredet, die zu dir passt.

You nearly talked yourself out of the work that suits you.

Beinahe hättest … ausgeredet presents the self-discouragement as narrowly avoided, not as a completed decision.

  • Fast hätte ich nach dem Gehalt gefragt, bevor ich gefragt hätte, ob du glücklich bist.

I nearly asked about the salary before asking whether you were happy.

The main clause identifies the near-event: asking about pay first. It does not establish whether either question was eventually asked.

  • Beinahe hätten wir eine Entscheidung gefeiert, die du noch gar nicht getroffen hattest.

We almost celebrated a decision you hadn't actually made.

The celebration almost happened but did not; the supposed decision had not yet been made.

  • Fast wäre ich deinem Weg gefolgt; ich bin froh, dass wir darüber sprechen können, warum ich es nicht getan habe.

I nearly followed your path; I'm glad we can discuss why I didn't.

Folgen takes wäre. The second half explicitly confirms that the speaker took a different path.

A near-event, not an implied condition

Beinahe or fast with past Konjunktiv II presents an event as close to happening but unrealised. No unreal if-clause is needed. The construction itself does not say whether avoiding the event was fortunate or regrettable.

UseFormExample
Near-eventbeinahe / fast + past Konjunktiv IIBeinahe hätte ich unterschrieben. — I nearly signed, but did not.
Different: conditional consequencepast Konjunktiv II linked to an unreal conditionIch hätte unterschrieben, wenn das Gehalt höher gewesen wäre. — I would have signed if the salary had been higher.
Meaning of the particlesbeinahe ≈ fastFast wäre ich geblieben. / Beinahe wäre ich geblieben. — I almost stayed.

Building the avertive past

Use the Konjunktiv II form of the verb's perfect auxiliary: hätte or wäre, normally followed by a past participle. When beinahe or fast comes first, the finite auxiliary follows immediately. The particle can also appear after the subject and auxiliary.

UseFormExample
With habenBeinahe + hätte + subject + … + past participleBeinahe hätte ich die Beförderung angenommen.
With seinFast + wäre + subject + … + past participleFast wäre ich in diesem Beruf geblieben.
Subject firstsubject + hätte / wäre + beinahe / fast + … + past participleWir hätten beinahe die Entscheidung gefeiert.
With lassen and another infinitivehätte + … + infinitive + lassenFast hätte ich das Vorstellungsgespräch über meine Zukunft entscheiden lassen.

More examples

Beinahe hätte ich den Vertrag unterschrieben. Erst im letzten Moment habe ich abgesagt.

I nearly signed the contract. I only declined at the last moment.

The continuation confirms how close the unrealised event came.

Ich wäre fast geblieben. Heute bin ich mit meinem neuen Beruf zufrieden.

I almost stayed. Today I'm happy with my new profession.

Subject-first order leaves the near-event meaning unchanged.

Fast hätten wir deine Zusage gefeiert. Gut, dass wir vorher nachgefragt haben.

We almost celebrated your acceptance. It's good that we checked first.

The celebration did not occur; checking prevented a premature reaction.
