When your adult child's marriage ends in German
When an adult child's marriage ends, German can offer companionship without imposing a verdict. This unit explores metalinguistic negation: rejecting a label or its implications rather than simply denying what happened. Some phrases voice the adult child's perspective; others offer a parent's support. Let the person affected choose the words for their own experience.
What you'll learn
- Recognise when negation challenges a description rather than a fact.
- Use corrective stress and context to distinguish a rejected label from a preferred account.
- Understand how quotation marks can identify the wording being challenged.
- Offer support without imposing narratives of failure, rescue or liberation.
German phrases for when your adult child's marriage ends
Ich habe nicht „aufgegeben“; ich habe aufgehört, so zu tun, als wären wir beide glücklich.
I haven't 'given up'; I've stopped pretending we're both happy.
The speaker rejects the judgment carried by aufgegeben, not necessarily the fact that they have stopped trying to continue the marriage.
Das ist keine „zerrüttete Familie“; das ist eine Familie, die eine neue Form findet.
This isn't a 'broken home'; it's a family finding another shape.
Zerrüttete Familie conveys the stigmatizing family label rather than translating home literally. The correction rejects a deficit-based description.
Ich „ergreife“ nicht „Partei“; ich weigere mich, dich dazu zu bringen, deinen Schmerz rechtfertigen zu müssen.
I'm not 'taking sides'; I'm refusing to make you defend your pain.
The quoted parts belong to the expression Partei ergreifen. The speaker reframes their support as refusing to demand justification for someone's pain.
Das war nicht „nur eine schwierige Phase“; wir waren schon seit Jahren unglücklich.
It wasn't 'just a rough patch'; we'd been unhappy for years.
The main target is the minimising implication of nur: the unhappiness was longstanding, not a brief disruption.
Ich muss nicht „gerettet“ werden; ich brauche einen Ort, an dem ich klar denken kann.
I don't need 'rescuing'; I need somewhere to think clearly.
The speaker rejects the rescue narrative while still expressing a concrete need for support.
Du stehst nicht „wieder bei null“; diese Jahre zählen immer noch.
You're not 'back to square one'; those years still count.
The correction challenges the implication that the years together have lost their value. Offer this perspective gently rather than insisting on it.
Bitte nenn es nicht „Freiheit“, solange ich noch trauere.
Please don't call it 'freedom' when I'm still grieving.
This explicitly rejects a label as inappropriate at this moment; it does not deny that separation might eventually bring freedom.
Ich bin nicht „tapfer“; ich versuche, so gut ich kann, durch den heutigen Tag zu kommen.
I'm not 'being brave'; I'm getting through today as best I can.
Even a positive label can feel imposed. The speaker replaces an admiring interpretation with their immediate lived experience.

aufgeben
to give up
Here it carries a possible judgment about insufficient effort, which the speaker rejects.
die Familie; plural: die Familien
family
Zerrüttete Familie means a deeply troubled or fractured family; it is a loaded label, not a neutral synonym for a separated family.
Partei ergreifen
to take sides
Fixed expression. Noun: die Partei; plural: die Parteien. Here Partei means a side in a dispute, not a political party.
der Schmerz; plural: die Schmerzen
pain
The singular can describe emotional suffering as a whole.
die Phase; plural: die Phasen
phase; period
Nur eine schwierige Phase can minimise distress by presenting it as temporary.
bei null stehen
to be at square one
Wieder bei null stehen suggests that earlier progress no longer counts.
die Freiheit; plural: die Freiheiten
freedom
The singular names the general state; the plural usually means particular freedoms or liberties.
trauern
to grieve
Can describe grief over the end of a marriage, not only grief after a death.
Negating a description rather than a fact
Metalinguistic negation objects to how an experience is described: a word, implication or tone is judged unsuitable. The following clause often supplies a more accurate account. Neither nicht nor kein automatically creates this reading; context determines whether the speaker rejects a fact or its wording.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rejecting a judgment | nicht + contested expression; alternative account | Ich habe nicht „aufgegeben“; ich habe aufgehört, so zu tun, als wären wir beide glücklich. |
| Rejecting a category | kein + contested noun phrase; alternative description | Das ist keine „zerrüttete Familie“; das ist eine Familie, die eine neue Form findet. |
| Rejecting minimisation | nicht + „nur …“ | Das war nicht „nur eine schwierige Phase“; wir waren schon seit Jahren unglücklich. |
Corrective stress, quotation and context
In writing, quotation marks can identify the disputed wording. In speech, corrective stress highlights that wording, with a pause before the alternative account. Stress may fall especially on nur when minimisation is the problem. Quotation and stress guide interpretation but do not prove that negation is metalinguistic.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stress the disputed label | nicht + stressed label | Ich bin nicht „TAPFER“; ich versuche, so gut ich kann, durch den heutigen Tag zu kommen. |
| Stress the disputed implication | nicht + stressed NUR + description | Das war nicht „NUR eine schwierige Phase“; wir waren schon seit Jahren unglücklich. |
| Make the naming objection explicit | Bitte nenn es nicht + label | Bitte nenn es nicht „Freiheit“, solange ich noch trauere. |
Not the same as ordinary negative coordination
Ordinary negation can simply deny two actions. Metalinguistic negation instead challenges the adequacy of an expression. A contrast with sondern can serve either purpose: the conjunction alone does not make a correction metalinguistic.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Two factual denials | weder … noch … | Ich habe weder angerufen noch geschrieben. |
| Factual alternative | nicht X, sondern Y | Ich habe nicht angerufen, sondern geschrieben. |
| Description challenged | nicht „X“; more fitting account | Du stehst nicht „wieder bei null“; diese Jahre zählen immer noch. |

Ihr habt nicht „versagt“ – eure Ehe ist zu Ende.
You haven't 'failed'—your marriage has ended.
Rejects the moral judgment in versagt while acknowledging the ending. It offers a perspective, not a verdict the adult child must accept.
Ich brauche keine „Rettung“; ich brauche jemanden, der mir zuhört.
I don't need 'rescue'; I need someone who will listen to me.
The speaker is not rejecting all help, but the framing of help as rescue.
Es war nicht „nur Streit“; ich habe mich über Jahre allein gefühlt.
It wasn't 'just arguing'; I felt alone for years.
Corrective stress on nur challenges minimisation without denying that arguments happened.
