One verb with two comic jobs in German

Zeugma lets one verb do two unexpectedly different jobs. German humour of this kind works best when both combinations are independently natural and grammatically sound, but their meanings clash amusingly. Some English examples transfer neatly; others need separate German verbs and lose the shared-verb joke.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise a shared verb used in contrasting literal and figurative senses.
  • Check each complement separately for natural wording and correct grammatical government.
  • Distinguish intentional semantic surprise from an accidental construction error.
  • Judge whether an English joke survives idiomatic German translation.
  • Create gentle examples that invite shared amusement rather than embarrassment.

German phrases for one verb with two comic jobs

  • Ich habe meinen Regenschirm und den Rest meiner Würde verloren.

I've lost my umbrella and what remained of my dignity.

The joke survives: verlieren naturally takes both the physical object and the abstract loss as accusative objects.

  • Du hast das Schweigen gebrochen und leider auch deine Lieblingstasse zerbrochen.

You broke the silence and, unfortunately, your favourite mug.

Natural German distinguishes das Schweigen brechen from eine Tasse zerbrechen. The related verbs retain an echo of the joke, but this is no longer one shared verb.

  • Sollen wir unsere Stimmen und unsere völlig unrealistischen Erwartungen senken?

Shall we lower our voices and our wildly unrealistic expectations?

Senken works with both complements. The shift from sound level to expectations preserves the gentle incongruity.

  • Du hast meinen Stuhl genommen und dir bei der Geschichte erhebliche Freiheiten genommen.

You took my chair and considerable liberties with the story.

The repeated nehmen preserves a verbal link. The second expression requires sich Freiheiten nehmen, hence dir; forcing both objects into the first construction would not give an equally natural German joke.

  • Ich habe alle Möglichkeiten ausgeschöpft und, deinem Seufzer nach zu urteilen, auch dich erschöpft.

I've exhausted the possibilities and, judging by that sigh, you.

German normally uses Möglichkeiten ausschöpfen but jemanden erschöpfen. The translation keeps the teasing turn through related verbs rather than strict zeugma.

  • Er hob die Augenbrauen und erhöhte den Preis für das Fahrrad.

He raised his eyebrows and the price of the bicycle.

These are the natural everyday German pairings. The parallel actions remain, but the English shared-verb effect is lost.

  • Damit war der Tisch abgeräumt, aber die dicke Luft war damit ganz bestimmt nicht beseitigt.

That cleared the table, though certainly not the air.

Die dicke Luft conveys the tense atmosphere. German cannot naturally use abräumen for both the table and the tension, so the contrast survives without a shared verb.

  • Funktioniert der Witz auch auf Deutsch oder nur in deinem Kopf?

Does that joke still work in German, or only in your head?

A useful translation-check question, not itself a clear example of zeugma. The final contrast can sound pointed; keep the delivery friendly.

zeugma

Here, a single verb is shared by coordinated complements that activate contrasting senses.

One shared verb, two readings

In this type of zeugma, coordinated complements depend on one verb but invite different interpretations of it. Each combination should make sense independently; the surprise comes from putting them together. Merely joining two objects does not create zeugma.

UseFormExample
Literal plus figurativeverlieren + concrete accusative object + und + abstract accusative objectSie verlor den Schlüssel und die Geduld.
Shared verb at the endBoth coordinated objects depend on the same participleIch habe meinen Regenschirm und den Rest meiner Würde verloren.
Ordinary coordinationOne verb with two objects in the same ordinary senseSie verlor den Schlüssel und den Regenschirm.

Check government before calling it a joke

Test each complement with the verb separately, including its case, preposition and any required reflexive pronoun. Different meanings are welcome; missing grammatical requirements are not. Complements need not always have identical forms, but each must be licensed by the shared verb.

UseFormExample
Both combinations workden Schlüssel verlieren / die Geduld verlierenSie verlor den Schlüssel und die Geduld.
A required pronoun mattersmeinen Stuhl nehmen / sich Freiheiten nehmenDu hast meinen Stuhl genommen und dir bei der Geschichte Freiheiten genommen.
Faulty case is not semantic withelfen requires dative, including in coordinationIncorrect: Sie half dem Kind und den Hund. Correct: Sie half dem Kind und dem Hund.

Check whether the joke travels

Translate each verb–complement combination independently, then see whether German naturally uses the same verb for both. Correct case alone is not enough: the wording must also be idiomatic. If German needs different verbs, retain the meaning and acknowledge that the original zeugma has changed or disappeared.

UseFormExample
Shared verb survivesdie Stimme senken / die Erwartungen senkenWir senkten die Stimme und unsere Erwartungen.
Related verbs replace itMöglichkeiten ausschöpfen / jemanden erschöpfenIch habe die Möglichkeiten ausgeschöpft und euch erschöpft.
Separate verbs are more naturaldie Augenbrauen heben / den Preis erhöhenEr hob die Augenbrauen und erhöhte den Preis.
