Accepting care without surrendering adulthood in German

Accepting practical help need not mean giving up independence. This unit uses the German recipient passive with bekommen or kriegen to describe support from the recipient’s perspective while keeping personal choice and dignity central.

What you'll learn

  • Describe help received using bekommen or kriegen plus Partizip II.
  • Make the dative recipient the subject while retaining the accusative object.
  • Distinguish neutral bekommen from colloquial kriegen.
  • Contrast the recipient’s perspective with the process passive without implying helplessness or consent.

German phrases for accepting care without surrendering adulthood

  • Ich bekomme meine Einkäufe schon geliefert; was mir fehlt, ist Gesellschaft.

I already have my shopping delivered; company is what I'm missing.

Ich is the recipient; meine Einkäufe remains the accusative object of the delivery.

  • Dass ich die Formulare erklärt bekomme, heißt nicht, dass ich die Entscheidung nicht selbst treffen kann.

Having the forms explained doesn't mean I can't make the decision.

Erklärt bekommen describes receiving an explanation, not surrendering decision-making authority.

  • Möchtest du deine Briefe vorgelesen bekommen, oder wäre dir das zu aufdringlich?

Would you like your letters read aloud, or would that feel intrusive?

Vorgelesen bekommen puts the listener at the centre of the offer; deine Briefe is the accusative object.

  • Ich habe den Termin bestätigt bekommen, aber ich wäre trotzdem froh, wenn mich jemand hinfahren könnte.

I've had the appointment confirmed, but I'd still welcome a lift.

Habe … bestätigt bekommen is the perfect form of the recipient passive: the confirmation has been received.

  • Du kannst dir die Mahlzeiten bringen lassen, ohne deine Schlüssel aus der Hand zu geben.

You can have the meals brought round without handing over your keys.

This idiomatic wording stresses choosing to arrange help. The recipient-focused alternative is: Du kannst die Mahlzeiten gebracht bekommen.

  • Ich weiß es zu schätzen, wenn ich Dinge organisiert bekomme, solange ich weiterhin gefragt werde, was mir passt.

I appreciate having things organised, provided I'm still asked what suits me.

Organisiert bekomme describes practical arrangements made for the speaker. In this context, it means receiving help, not managing to organise things oneself.

  • Wenn ich alles erledigt bekomme, fühle ich mich mitunter seltsam überflüssig.

Getting everything done for me can leave me feeling oddly unnecessary.

The recipient passive can describe unwelcome effects of help; it does not inherently express gratitude.

  • Lass uns die Unterstützung organisieren, die du möchtest, statt alles zu übernehmen, was ich übernehmen könnte.

Let's arrange the support you want, rather than everything I could provide.

An active formulation is natural here because the emphasis is on agreeing what to arrange together.

Making the recipient the subject

With suitable verbs, bekommen plus Partizip II makes the active clause’s dative recipient the subject. The accusative object stays accusative. The helper can be omitted or named with von. This construction is not freely available with every verb that takes a dative object.

UseFormExample
Active: recipient in the dativehelper + verb + dative recipient + accusative objectMeine Tochter erklärt mir den Antrag.
Recipient passiverecipient as subject + bekommen + accusative object + Partizip IIIch bekomme den Antrag erklärt.
Helper namedrecipient passive + von + helperIch bekomme den Antrag von meiner Tochter erklärt.
Completed eventhaben + accusative object + Partizip II + bekommenIch habe den Antrag erklärt bekommen.

Bekommen and kriegen

Bekommen is the neutral choice within this construction; kriegen is colloquial and common in informal speech. Both can describe the same support. Kriegen is not automatically impolite, but bekommen is safer for a measured conversation.

UseFormExample
Neutralbekommen + Partizip IIIch bekomme die Einkäufe gebracht.
Colloquialkriegen + Partizip IIIch kriege die Einkäufe gebracht.

Recipient perspective versus process passive

The recipient passive makes the person receiving help the subject. The process passive with werden makes the thing acted upon the subject; the recipient can remain dative. Neither construction by itself says whether the help was requested or whether the recipient can perform the task independently.

UseFormExample
Recipient as subjectich + bekomme + accusative object + Partizip IIIch bekomme den Brief vorgelesen.
Thing acted upon as subjectnominative subject + wird + dative recipient + Partizip IIDer Brief wird mir vorgelesen.
Ordinary receiving, not recipient passivebekommen + noun, without a verbal participleIch bekomme einen Brief.
