When grandchildren are not the plan in German
Acknowledge hopes for grandchildren without treating them as an adult child's duty. This unit uses elevated concessive clauses with mögen to recognise a feeling or viewpoint while rejecting the conclusion that might be drawn from it.
What you'll learn
- Use verb-first clauses with mögen to acknowledge a point without conceding a claim.
- Connect the concession to a main clause with so or doch, or without an explicit linking word.
- Distinguish concessive mögen from liking, wishing and permission.
- Recognise the construction's elevated register and use it sensitively in family conversations.
German phrases for when grandchildren are not the plan
Mögen deine Hoffnungen auch verständlich sein, so entstehen daraus für mich keine Verpflichtungen, die ich übernehmen muss.
Your hopes may be understandable; they still aren't obligations I inherit.
Mögen agrees with plural Hoffnungen. The main clause rejects the idea that a parent's hopes become the child's duties.
Magst du dir Enkelkinder auch noch so liebevoll ausgemalt haben, so ist das doch nicht die Zukunft, die ich mir wünsche.
However fondly you pictured grandchildren, that isn't the future I want.
Magst opens the concession; noch so conveys 'however much'. Ausgemalt haben places the imagined future in an earlier act of imagining.
Mag ich auch enttäuscht sein, so liegt es doch in meiner Verantwortung, mit diesem Gefühl umzugehen.
I may feel disappointed, but managing that feeling is my responsibility.
A parent's acknowledgment of disappointment is followed by ownership of that feeling, not a request for the child to resolve it.
Mag dir die Entscheidung auch endgültig erscheinen, so ist sie doch keine Einladung zum Verhandeln.
The decision may seem final to you; it isn't an invitation to negotiate.
The concession acknowledges how the decision appears to the listener without making it negotiable.
Mag dir das Fortbestehen der Familie auch noch so viel bedeuten, so darf es doch nicht den Ausschlag für meine Entscheidung geben.
Family continuity may matter deeply, yet it cannot decide this for me.
Noch so viel acknowledges the strength of the concern without granting it authority over the speaker's decision.
Magst du es auch liebevoll meinen, so setzen mich wiederholte Andeutungen dennoch unter Druck.
You may mean it affectionately; repeated hints still put me under pressure.
The contrast separates affectionate intent from the pressure caused by repeated hints.
Mag sich das auch noch so ungewohnt anfühlen, so möchte ich doch das Leben kennenlernen, für das du dich entscheidest.
However unfamiliar this feels, I want to know the life you're choosing.
The parent concedes unfamiliarity while affirming an interest in the child's chosen life.
Mögen wir uns Erfüllung auch unterschiedlich vorstellen, so muss doch keiner von uns gewinnen.
We may imagine fulfilment differently; neither of us needs to win.
Mögen wir acknowledges a difference without framing the conversation as a contest.

Verb-first concessions with mögen
Put the finite form of mögen first, followed by the subject and the rest of the clause; the infinitive comes at the end. The meaning is 'even if' or 'granted that', not a question. The speaker allows a point to stand while denying that it determines the outcome. Auch is common but optional. Separate the concession from the following main clause with a comma.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Singular | Mag + subject + (auch) + … + infinitive, … | Mag der Wunsch auch verständlich sein, so begründet er keinen Anspruch. |
| Second-person singular | Magst du + (auch) + … + infinitive, … | Magst du es auch liebevoll meinen, so setzt es mich dennoch unter Druck. |
| Plural | Mögen + plural subject + (auch) + … + infinitive, … | Mögen unsere Hoffnungen unterschiedlich sein, so können wir einander dennoch respektieren. |
| Without auch | Mag + subject + … + infinitive, … | Mag der Wunsch verständlich sein, er begründet keinen Anspruch. |
Following main clauses and emphatic concessions
The main clause states what remains true despite the concession. So can introduce it, followed immediately by the finite verb. Doch can explicitly mark the contrast. Neither word is required. Within the concession, noch so plus an adjective or quantity expression strengthens the meaning to 'however' or 'no matter how'.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With so | Mag …, so + finite verb + subject + … | Mag ich enttäuscht sein, so bleibt der Umgang damit meine Verantwortung. |
| With contrastive doch | Mag …, doch + subject + finite verb + … | Mag ich enttäuscht sein, doch die Entscheidung liegt bei dir. |
| Without an explicit link | Mag …, subject + finite verb + … | Mag ich enttäuscht sein, die Entscheidung liegt bei dir. |
| However strongly | Mag … + (auch) noch so + adjective or quantity expression + infinitive, … | Mag dir dieser Wunsch auch noch so viel bedeuten, so verpflichtet er mich zu nichts. |
Meaning and register
Concessive mögen does not mean 'like' and does not grant permission. It provisionally accepts a point for the sake of the contrast that follows. The construction sounds elevated, literary or carefully rhetorical; repeated use in an intimate conversation can sound rehearsed or distancing. A calm tone helps keep it from sounding dismissive.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Concession | Mag … sein, … = Granted that …, … | Mag der Wunsch verständlich sein, so ist er dennoch kein Anspruch. |
| Liking: a different use | mögen + object = to like | Ich mag Kinder. |
| Permission: not the meaning here | Concessive mögen ≠ dürfen | Magst du enttäuscht sein, so bleibt es dennoch meine Entscheidung. |

Our ideas may differ; we can still remain close.
Neither auch nor so is necessary for the concessive reading.
