Breaking an inherited silence in German
Practise accountable self-repair in a conversation with an adult child about a relative left out of the family story. Use German corrective expressions to replace comforting or minimising wording with a more precise account, without claiming more than you know.
What you'll learn
- Use nein, genauer gesagt and besser gesagt to revise your own wording openly.
- Make a correction audible through a pause and renewed emphasis, or visible through a dash.
- Distinguish a correction that acknowledges responsibility from a reformulation that merely softens it.
- Correct overstatements while preserving the adult child's right to an honest account.
German phrases for breaking an inherited silence
Wir haben den Kontakt verloren – nein, das klingt, als wäre es zufällig passiert; wir haben aufgehört, einander zu schreiben.
We lost touch—no, that makes it sound accidental; we stopped writing.
Nein explicitly withdraws the suggestion of an accidental loss of contact; the replacement names what people did.
Sie wurde selten erwähnt – genauer gesagt, es wurde davon abgeraten, sie zu erwähnen.
She was rarely mentioned—more precisely, mentioning her was discouraged.
Genauer gesagt replaces a description of frequency with the social pressure behind it. It still leaves open who applied that pressure.
Ich habe die Erklärung akzeptiert; besser gesagt, ich bin nie auf die Idee gekommen, sie zu hinterfragen.
I accepted the explanation; better put, I never thought to challenge it.
Besser gesagt revises apparent considered acceptance into an admission of never questioning the account.
War sie schwierig, oder war das einfach das Etikett, das der Familie gelegen kam?
Was she difficult, or was that simply the family's convenient label?
This questions an inherited description rather than directly repairing the speaker's own utterance.
Ich habe dich nicht beschützt – nein, ich wollte mich meinem eigenen Unbehagen nicht stellen.
I wasn't protecting you—no, I was avoiding my own discomfort.
Here nein reinforces the rejection of a protective motive and introduces the speaker's actual motive.
Was ich Diskretion nannte, war, ehrlicher gesagt, eine Weigerung, nachzufragen.
What I called discretion was, more honestly, a refusal to ask.
Ehrlicher gesagt marks a more candid reassessment: a respectable-sounding description is replaced with an admission.
Du hattest ein Recht darauf, die ganze Geschichte zu erfahren – oder zumindest alles, was ich tatsächlich wusste.
You deserved the whole account—or at least everything I actually knew.
Oder zumindest corrects the scope of the claim. Acknowledging limits to knowledge need not weaken accountability.
Lass uns trennen, was passiert ist, von dem, was wir uns angewöhnt haben, darüber zu sagen.
Let's separate what happened from what we've become used to saying.
This invites a shared examination of the family account; it does not itself contain a self-repair.

jemandem gelegen kommen

In the phrase about the family's label, this suggests that the description served the family's interests.
Epanorthosis: openly revising an utterance
Epanorthosis is an explicit self-correction: the speaker offers wording, then replaces or sharpens it. The first formulation remains audible, making the change visible to the listener. The correction may replace a label, revise an entire claim or restrict its scope.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Reject an implication | Initial wording – nein, replacement | Wir haben sie vergessen – nein, wir haben sie bewusst nicht eingeladen. |
| Make the account more precise | Initial wording – genauer gesagt, more precise account | Wir wussten davon – genauer gesagt, wir hatten ihren Brief gelesen. |
| Replace an inadequate formulation | Initial wording – besser gesagt, revised account | Ich habe abgewartet – besser gesagt, ich habe das Gespräch vermieden. |
| Limit an overstatement | Broad claim – oder zumindest narrower claim | Ich erzähle dir alles – oder zumindest alles, woran ich mich sicher erinnere. |
Pacing and punctuation
In speech, pause before the repair and give the replacement clear emphasis. Nein often creates a sharper break; genauer gesagt and besser gesagt can sound more measured. In writing, a spaced dash clearly marks the turn. These markers do not themselves determine whether the speaker sounds sincere.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Clear corrective break | First account – marker, replacement | Ich wollte Ruhe – nein, ich wollte keine Fragen hören. |
| Correction within a continuing sentence | …, ehrlicher gesagt, … | Das war, ehrlicher gesagt, eine Ausrede. |
| Spoken emphasis | Pause before the repair; stress the changed meaning | Wir haben den Kontakt verloren – nein, wir haben ihn abgebrochen. |
Accountability versus evasion
Judge the information added by the correction, not just its marker. An accountable repair clarifies actions, motives, responsibility or the limits of knowledge. An evasive one makes conduct sound milder or shifts attention away from the speaker. Greater precision does not require inventing certainty or assigning blame beyond the evidence.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Accountable correction | Vague description → specific personal action | Der Kontakt ist abgerissen – genauer gesagt, ich habe ihre Briefe nicht mehr beantwortet. |
| Evasive reformulation | Specific action → softer description | Ich habe ihre Briefe ignoriert – besser gesagt, ich habe mir etwas Zeit gelassen. |
| Honest limit | Claim of certainty → identified basis for the claim | Ich wusste, warum sie ging – nein, ich kannte nur die Erklärung meiner Eltern. |
