German phrases for wildlife project ideas

  • Zeichne einen Tiger für dein Poster.

Draw a tiger for your poster.

Tiger is masculine. Use einen because the tiger is the direct object of zeichne.

  • Füge hier einen Elefanten hinzu.

    Add an elephant here.

Hinzufügen means “to add.” In this instruction, hinzu goes at the end. Der Elefant becomes einen Elefanten as a direct object.

  • Finde ein Bild von einem Fuchs.

Find a picture of a fox.

Bild is neuter, so use ein. After von (“of”), masculine ein becomes einem.

  • Eine Eule kann dein nächstes Tier sein.

An owl can be your next animal.

Eule is feminine, so use eine. Kann means “can”; sein (“be”) goes at the end.

  • Du kannst ein Modell bauen.

    You can make a model.

Modell is neuter, so use ein. German uses ein Modell bauen, literally “build a model.”

  • Lass uns ein Video über Bären anschauen.

Let's watch a video about bears.

Lass uns … means “Let's …”. Video is neuter, so use ein.

  • Benutze einen orangefarbenen Stift für den Schnabel.

Use an orange pencil for the beak.

Stift is masculine and a direct object, so use einen. Orangefarben means “orange-colored”; here it takes the ending -en.

  • Schreib oben einen Tiernamen.

Write an animal name at the top.

Oben means “at the top.” Der Tiername becomes einen Tiernamen as a direct object.

German equivalents of “a/an”

English chooses “a” or “an” by the next sound. German chooses an article by the noun's grammatical gender and role in the sentence. For a subject, use ein with masculine and neuter nouns, and eine with feminine nouns.

UseFormExample
Masculine subjecteinEin Tiger ist groß. — A tiger is big.
Feminine subjecteineEine Eule ist hier. — An owl is here.
Neuter subjecteinEin Bild ist hier. — A picture is here.

“A/an” with direct objects

A direct object is what you draw, find, make or use. This role uses the accusative case. Masculine ein changes to einen; feminine eine and neuter ein stay the same.

UseFormExample

Feminine direct objecteine + nounZeichne eine Eule. — Draw an owl.
