Baby Animal Book in German

Point to animal pictures and name them in German. Use ein or eine for English “a” and “an,” and practise simple questions with your baby.

What you'll learn

  • Name eight animals in a picture book.
  • Use ein and eine with animal names.
  • Notice einen after siehst du with masculine nouns.
  • Invite your child to look with Schau mal!

German phrases for baby animal book

  • Schau mal, eine Katze!

    Look, a cat!

Schau mal is a friendly way to say “Look!” Katze is feminine, so use eine.

  • Hier ist ein Hund.

    Here is a dog.

Hier ist means “Here is.” Hund is masculine, so use ein here.

  • Das ist eine Ente.

    That is a duck.

Das ist means “That is.” Ente is feminine, so use eine.

  • Siehst du ein Kaninchen?

    Can you see a rabbit?

Siehst du …? naturally asks “Can you see …?” Kaninchen is neuter, so ein stays the same.

  • Schau mal, ein Elefant!

    Look, an elephant!

Elefant is masculine. German uses ein here even though the English word takes “an.”

  • Hier ist eine Eule.

    Here is an owl.

Eule is feminine, so use eine.

  • Das ist eine Ameise.

    That is an ant.

Ameise is feminine, so use eine.

  • Siehst du einen Oktopus?

    Can you see an octopus?

Oktopus is masculine. Use einen because it is the object of siehst: the animal you see.

Saying “a” and “an” in German

English chooses “a” or “an” by the next sound. German chooses by the noun’s grammatical gender and its role in the sentence. Learn each animal with der, die or das. These genders do not necessarily tell you whether the animal is male or female.

UseFormExample
Masculineder → einHier ist ein Hund.
Femininedie → eineDas ist eine Ente.
Neuterdas → einHier ist ein Kaninchen.

Asking “Can you see …?”

Use Siehst du …? when talking to your child. The animal being seen is the direct object, which takes the accusative case. Masculine ein changes to einen; feminine eine and neuter ein stay the same.

UseFormExample
Masculine objectein → einenSiehst du einen Oktopus?
Feminine objecteine → eineSiehst du eine Katze?
Neuter objectein → einSiehst du ein Kaninchen?
