Pointing out things: ist and sind

When showing your baby something, use da ist for one thing and da sind for several things. German also has es gibt (“there is/there are”), but da ist and da sind are natural for pointing out things you can see.

UseFormExample
One thingDa ist + singular noun phrase.Da ist deine Flasche.
Several thingsDa sind + plural noun phrase.Da sind zwei Lätzchen.
Something hereHier ist + singular noun phrase.Hier ist eine Windel.

Starting with the location

You can start with the location. The verb comes next, followed by the thing or things. Choose ist or sind to match the noun, even when the noun comes after the verb.

UseFormExample
One thing in a placeLocation + ist + singular noun phrase. In der Badewanne ist eine Ente.
Several things in a placeLocation + sind + plural noun phrase.Im Wasser sind Blasen.

Saying where something is

For fixed locations, in and auf take the dative case. In these phrases, die becomes der, and das becomes dem. Im is short for in dem. Learn these short location phrases as chunks.

UseFormExample
In the bathin der BadewanneIn der Badewanne ist eine Ente.
In the waterin dem Wasser → im WasserIm Wasser sind Blasen.
