Describing weather with es ist
Es ist means “it is.” Add a weather adjective to describe the conditions. After ist, the adjective has no extra ending.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Es ist + adjective. | Es ist sonnig. — It is sunny. |
| Add a time | Es ist + time + adjective. | Es ist heute regnerisch. — It is rainy today. |
| Add a place | Es ist + adjective + place. | Es ist windig im Park. — It is windy at the park. |
Starting with another phrase
You can put a time, place, or other phrase first. In a German statement, the conjugated verb stays in the second position. A whole phrase counts as one position.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Time first | Time + ist + es + adjective. | Heute ist es kalt. — It is cold today. |
| Activity phrase first | Für deine Fahrradtour + ist + es + adjective. | Für deine Fahrradtour ist es sonnig. — It is sunny for your bike ride. |
