  • Es ist heute sonnig.

    It is sunny today.

    Sonnig means sunny. Heute means today.

  • Es ist heute Morgen kalt.

    It is cold this morning.

    Heute Morgen means this morning. Morgen has a capital letter here because it is a noun.

  • Es ist draußen windig.

    It is windy outside.

    Draußen means outside.

  • Es ist heute bewölkt.

    It is cloudy today.

    Bewölkt describes a cloudy sky.

  • Es ist im Park warm.

    It is warm in the park.

    Im Park means in the park.

  • Es ist heute Nachmittag heiß.

    It is hot this afternoon.

    Heute Nachmittag means this afternoon. Heiß means hot.

  • Es regnet; nimm deinen Mantel mit.

    It is raining; take your coat.

    Es regnet means it is raining. Nimm deinen Mantel mit tells one child to take their coat along.

Describing weather with Es ist

Es ist means it is. Add a describing word such as sonnig or kalt. After ist, this word does not take an extra ending.

Rain and snow

German uses a single present-tense verb for is raining and is snowing. Do not add ist before regnet or schneit.

Clothing reminders for one child

Use these informal command forms with one child. Mitnehmen means to take along, and anziehen means to put on. In these commands, mit and an go at the end.
