A reason for each choice in Spanish

Helping your child understand the 'why' behind everyday decisions builds logic and vocabulary. In Spanish, we use 'porque' to provide reasons, maintaining a similar sentence structure to English.

What you'll learn

  • Connect two ideas using the conjunction 'porque' (because).
  • Describe physical states (light, dark, tight) as reasons for actions.
  • Practice using 'estar' for temporary conditions and 'ser' for characteristics.

Spanish phrases for a reason for each choice

  • Susurro porque el bebé está escuchando.

I am whispering because the baby is listening.

'Susurrar' means to whisper. 'Está escuchando' is the present continuous.

  • Necesitamos una linterna porque está oscuro.

We need a torch because it is dark.

'Linterna' is used for a flashlight or torch.

  • Elijo este bolso porque es más ligero.

I choose this bag because it is lighter.

'Ligero' describes weight. Use 'ser' (es) because it is an inherent quality.

  • La tapa se queda cerrada porque las cuentas son pequeñitas.

The lid stays shut because the beads are tiny.

'Pequeñitas' is the diminutive form of 'pequeñas', often used with kids.

  • Necesito ayuda porque este nudo está apretado.

I need help because this knot is tight.

    'Apretado' means tight or squeezed.

  • Estamos esperando porque Sam no está listo.

We are waiting because Sam is not ready.

'Listo' with 'estar' means 'ready'; with 'ser' it would mean 'smart'.

  • Me gusta este asiento porque puedo verte.

I like this seat because I can see you.

'Verte' combines the verb 'ver' (to see) and the pronoun 'te' (you).

  • La ventana está abierta porque la habitación está calurosa.

The window is open because the room is warm.

Use 'está abierta' for the state of the window.
