Adversative Subordination with 'Mientras que'
To contrast two facts that exist simultaneously but represent opposite ideas, Spanish uses 'mientras que'. Unlike the temporal 'mientras' (meaning 'while' as in 'at the same time'), 'mientras que' explicitly signals an opposition. In these structures, both verbs usually remain in the indicative mood because they describe objective realities.
