Holding two views at once in Spanish

Developing the ability to balance conflicting ideas is a key B2 skill. In Spanish, this is primarily achieved using paired connectors to weigh different perspectives or internal conflicts.

What you'll learn

  • Present two competing perspectives clearly.
  • Use 'por un lado' and 'por otro' to structure arguments.
  • Express nuance when making decisions with complex factors.

Spanish phrases for holding two views at once

  • Por un lado, me gustan las sorpresas; por otro, me gusta prepararme.

On the one hand, I like surprises; on the other, I like to prepare.

Uses the standard contrastive pair 'por un lado... por otro'.

  • Por una parte es más barato, pero por otra es menos fiable.

It's cheaper on the one hand, but less reliable on the other.

'Por una parte' is a common alternative to 'por un lado'.

  • Quiero una respuesta sincera, pero a la vez me preocupa escucharla.

I want an honest answer, but I also worry about hearing it.

'A la vez' translates to 'at the same time' or 'also'.

  • Una parte de mí quiere liderar; la otra quiere menos responsabilidad.

Part of me wants to lead; another part wants less responsibility.

Using 'una parte de mí' adds a personal, reflective tone.

  • Necesitamos una decisión rápida, pero también necesitamos la opinión de todos.

We need a quick decision, but we also need everyone's opinion.

'Pero también' is a simple way to introduce a secondary requirement.

  • La idea es emocionante, pero conlleva bastante incertidumbre.

The idea is exciting, but it involves quite a lot of uncertainty.

'Conlleva' is a more sophisticated way to say 'brings with it' or 'involves'.

  • Agradezco la oferta, pero también me gustaría arreglármelas solo.

I appreciate the offer, but I'd also like to manage alone.

'Arreglárselas' is a useful reflexive verb meaning 'to manage' or 'to get by'.

  • Tener más opciones es útil, pero puede dificultar la toma de decisiones.

More choice is useful, but it can make deciding harder.

'La toma de decisiones' is the standard noun phrase for 'decision-making'.
