Action vs. Location (Poner vs. Estar)

In Spanish, we use the verb 'poner' (to put) for the action of moving something to a destination. We use 'estar' (to be) to describe the stationary location. Unlike some languages, the nouns following the prepositions 'en' or 'sobre' do not change their form based on movement.

UseFormExample
Action (Destination)Pon + [object] + en + [location]Pon el libro en la mesa.
State (Location)[object] + está + en + [location]El libro está en la mesa.

The Preposition 'En'

The word 'en' is very versatile. It can mean 'in', 'at', or 'on'. If you want to be more specific about being 'inside', use 'dentro de'. If you want to be specific about being 'on top of', use 'sobre'.

UseFormExample
General 'In/On'enEn la caja (In the box)
Specific 'On'sobreSobre la silla (On the chair)
