German phrases for a1 halfway chest

  • Badezeit!

    Bath time!

    A cheerful way to announce that it is time for a bath.

  • Ich möchte etwas Brot.

    I would like some bread.

    Use ich möchte to ask politely for something.

  • Gute Nacht, mein Schatz.

    Good night, my love.

    Mein Schatz is an affectionate expression for a child or partner.

  • Heute ist Montag.

    Today is Monday.

    German day names begin with a capital letter.

  • Ich bin stolz auf dich.

    I am proud of you.

    Use dich when speaking directly to one child or someone you know well.

  • Wo ist die Toilette?

    Where is the bathroom?

    Use Toilette when asking where to use the toilet. Badezimmer means a room for bathing.

  • Halt meine Hand.

    Hold my hand.

    Halt is a direct instruction to one child or someone you know well.

  • Es ist sonnig.

    It is sunny.

    Use es ist with adjectives to describe the weather.

Review: forms of sein (to be)

Use bin with ich (I), and ist with es (it) or a singular noun. In Heute ist Montag, the verb comes after the opening time word.

Polite requests and familiar instructions

Ich möchte means I would like. For a direct instruction to one familiar person, use an imperative such as halt. Bitte (please) can make either phrase more polite.

Ich möchte etwas Wasser.

I would like some water.

Replace Brot with Wasser to ask for a drink.

Heute ist Dienstag.

Today is Tuesday.

Use the same pattern with another day.

Wo ist das Badezimmer?

Where is the bathroom?

This asks for the room used for bathing, for example in a home.

Halt bitte meine Hand.

Please hold my hand.

Bitte adds please to the instruction.

Es ist warm.

It is warm.

Replace sonnig with warm to describe the temperature.
