Review: destinations with in and auf

Use the accusative when in or auf introduces the destination of an action. This answers where something is going, rather than where it is.

UseFormExample
Into the bagin + accusativeIch habe eine kleine Überraschung in die Tasche gelegt.
Onto the tableauf + accusativeIch habe die Tasche auf den Tisch gelegt.

Review: mit and ohne

Mit always takes the dative; ohne always takes the accusative.

UseFormExample
With your helpmit + dativeMit deiner Hilfe kann ich alles einpacken.
Without your helpohne + accusativeIch kann mir ohne deine Hilfe die Haare bürsten.

Review: dative reflexives for personal care

When the body part is the accusative object, use mir or dir for the person doing the action to themselves. German normally uses the definite article with the body part.

UseFormExample
I brush my hairich + mir + die HaareIch bürste mir die Haare.
You brush your hairdu + dir + die HaareDu bürstest dir die Haare.

Review: polite requests and indirect questions

Use könnte forms with an infinitive to make polite requests. An indirect question keeps its question word, such as wo or wann, and puts the finite verb at the end.

UseFormExample
Ask someone you knowKönntest du … + infinitive?Könntest du mir deinen Plan zeigen?
Ask permissionKönnte ich … + infinitive?Könnte ich deinen Plan sehen?
Ask formally with an indirect questionKönnten Sie mir sagen, wo … + finite verb?Könnten Sie mir sagen, wo der Eingang ist?

Review: adjective endings after ein and eine

Keep matching the adjective ending to the noun's gender and case. In these familiar nominative and accusative forms, feminine adjectives end in -e and neuter adjectives in -es; masculine forms change from -er to -en.

UseFormExample
Feminine accusativeeine kleine ÜberraschungIch habe eine kleine Überraschung eingepackt.
Masculine nominativeein kleiner TurmDas ist ein kleiner Turm.
Masculine accusativeeinen kleinen TurmIch habe einen kleinen Turm gebaut.
Neuter accusativeein kleines BuchIch habe ein kleines Buch eingepackt.

Review: separable verbs in the Perfekt

With these familiar separable verbs, ge- goes between the prefix and the participle stem.

UseFormExample
Packeinpacken → eingepacktWir haben alles eingepackt.
Carry onweitermachen → weitergemachtWir haben weitergemacht.

Review: trotzdem and bevor

Trotzdem introduces an action that happens despite what came before; the finite verb follows it immediately. Bevor means before and sends the finite verb to the end of its clause.

UseFormExample
Continue despite a setbackTrotzdem + finite verb + subjectDer erste Versuch hat nicht geklappt. Trotzdem haben wir weitergemacht.
