Safe steps across the road in German

Practise calm road-crossing routines with bevor (before). Use it to say what you do first, before taking the next step.

What you'll learn

  • Use bevor to link a safety routine to the action that follows.
  • Put the verb at the end of a bevor clause.
  • Use bevor clauses before or after the main clause.

German phrases for safe steps across the road

  • Wir bleiben stehen, bevor wir den Bordstein erreichen.

We stop before we reach the kerb.

The stopping happens first. The verb erreichen ends the bevor clause.

  • Halt meine Hand, bevor wir über die Straße gehen.

Hold my hand before we cross.

Über die Straße gehen is a natural way to say 'cross the road'. Gehen comes last in the bevor clause.

  • Wir schauen nach links und rechts, bevor wir auf die Straße treten.

We look both ways before we step into the road.

Nach links und rechts means 'both ways' here. Treten ends the bevor clause.

  • Bevor wir über die Straße gehen, warten wir auf Grün.

Before we cross, we wait for the green light.

Auf Grün warten means 'wait for the green light'. After the opening bevor clause, the main clause begins warten wir.

  • Ich schaue, ob Fahrräder kommen, bevor ich losgehe.

I check for bicycles before I move.

Here, losgehen means 'start walking'. Losgehe stays together at the end of the bevor clause.

  • Bevor du mir folgst, schau noch einmal.

Before you follow me, look again.

Folgst comes at the end of the opening bevor clause.

  • Wir warten, bis das Auto anhält, bevor wir über die Straße gehen.

We wait until the car stops before we cross.

The bevor clause names the later action: crossing. Its verb gehen comes last.

  • Bevor wir weitergehen, lass uns nachsehen, ob alle da sind.

Before we walk on, let's check that everyone is here.

Weitergehen means 'walk on' and stays together at the end of the bevor clause.
