    Neben means next to. Das Bett becomes dem Bett here.

  • Das Handtuch ist neben der Babybadewanne.

    The towel is next to the baby bath.

    Die Babybadewanne becomes der Babybadewanne after neben when describing a location.

Locations: use the dative

In, auf, neben and unter are two-way prepositions. Use the dative when saying where someone or something is. These phrases answer Wo? (Where?), not Wohin? (Where to?).

Dem and der

For singular location nouns, the dative article is dem for masculine and neuter nouns, and der for feminine nouns. Choose the article from the noun after the preposition.

Talking gently to your baby

Use du for you when speaking to your baby. In these sentences, use dein with masculine or neuter subject nouns and deine with feminine subject nouns. German uses du liegst for both you lie and you are lying.

Wo asks about location. Im is short for in dem.

Wo ist deine Flasche? Sie ist in der Tasche.

Where is your bottle? It is in the bag.

Use sie for the feminine noun die Flasche.

Dein Schnuller ist auf dem Tisch.

Your dummy is on the table.

Auf dem Tisch describes a location on the table.

Dein Teddy ist unter der Decke.

Your teddy is under the blanket.

Use der after unter here because die Decke is feminine.
