- Describe what someone could or could not do in the past.
- Explain what someone had to do during a repair.
- Put the main verb in the infinitive at the end of a simple sentence.
- Talk about tools, asking for help and finishing a repair.

Yesterday I could not open your toolbox.

Nicht allein means “not alone”: help was needed.

We had to ask your uncle for help.
Jemanden um Hilfe bitten means “to ask someone for help.” Bitten goes at the end.

Past forms of können and müssen
Können becomes konnte (“could” or “was able to”), and müssen becomes musste (“had to”). These Präteritum forms are common in everyday spoken German. Neither past form has an umlaut.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ich | konnte / musste | Ich konnte das Fahrrad reparieren. |
| du | konntest / musstest | Du musstest ein neues Teil kaufen. |
| er / sie / es | konnte / musste | Sie konnte das Modell reparieren. |
| wir / sie / Sie | konnten / mussten | Wir mussten um Hilfe bitten. |
| ihr | konntet / musstet | Ihr konntet die Werkzeuge finden. |
Modal verb second, infinitive last
In a simple statement, the conjugated modal verb takes the second position. The main verb goes at the end in its infinitive form, without zu. If a time expression comes first, the subject follows the modal verb.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject first | subject + modal verb + other information + infinitive | Wir mussten ein neues Teil kaufen. |
| Time expression first | time expression + modal verb + subject + other information + infinitive | Gestern konnte ich deinen Werkzeugkasten nicht öffnen. |
| Separable verb | modal verb + other information + complete infinitive | Du musstest die Werkzeuge wegräumen. |
Could not versus did not have to
Konnte nicht means someone was unable to do something. Musste nicht means something was not necessary; it does not mean it was forbidden.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Unable to do something | konnte nicht + infinitive | Ich konnte den Werkzeugkasten nicht öffnen. |
| No need to do something | musste nicht + infinitive | Ich musste kein neues Teil kaufen. |
