Make Room Together in German

Use friendly German instructions to make room for hobbies and school projects. Practise in and auf for destinations, and compare them with descriptions of where things are.

German phrases for make room together

  • Leg deine Projektmappe in den Schrank.

    Put your project folder in the cupboard.

    Leg is a friendly instruction to one child. In den Schrank gives the destination; der Schrank becomes den Schrank.

  • Deine Projektmappe ist im Schrank.

    Your project folder is in the cupboard.

    This describes a location, so use the dative. Im means in dem.

  • Leg deine Sportsachen in die Tasche.

    Put your sports clothes in the bag.

    Sportsachen is a natural word for sports clothes or kit. Die Tasche stays die Tasche in the accusative.

  • Geh ins Jugendzentrum.

    Go into the youth centre.

    Geh is the instruction form of gehen for one child. Ins means in das and shows a destination.

  • Leg dein Poster auf den Tisch.

    Put your poster on the table.

    Auf den Tisch describes where the poster should go. Der Tisch becomes den Tisch in the accusative.

  • Dein Poster ist auf dem Tisch.

    Your poster is on the table.

    The poster is already there, so use the dative: auf dem Tisch.

  • Leg dein Heft auf die Bank.

    Put your notebook on the bench.

    Heft means an exercise book or school notebook. Auf die Bank gives the destination.

  • Leg dein Tablet auf das Sofa.

    Put your tablet on the sofa.

    Das Sofa stays das Sofa in the accusative. Auf das can also be shortened to aufs.

Use the accusative when something goes into or onto a place. Ask Wohin? (Where to?). In means into; auf means onto in these instructions. The article depends on the German noun's gender.

Locations: in and auf with the dative

Use the dative to say where someone or something is. Ask Wo? (Where?). In means in; auf means on. The key distinction is destination versus location, not simply movement versus no movement.

Friendly instructions to one child

Use Leg for putting an object down and Geh for going somewhere. These are informal singular imperatives. You do not add du. Add bitte to make an instruction more polite.

Your sports clothes are in the bag.

Compare in die Tasche for the destination with in der Tasche for the location. Sportsachen is plural, so use sind.

Dein Heft ist auf der Bank.

Your notebook is on the bench.

Compare auf die Bank for the destination with auf der Bank for the location.

Dein Tablet ist auf dem Sofa.

Your tablet is on the sofa.

Compare auf das Sofa for the destination with auf dem Sofa for the location.
