Research With Support in German

Help your child ask politely for support with a school project in the library. Use könnte ich to ask permission, könntest du with familiar people, and könnten Sie with library staff.

What you'll learn

  • Ask politely to look at notes, borrow items, and use a computer.
  • Ask familiar people and library staff for research help.
  • Build polite questions with könnte and an infinitive.

German phrases for research with support

  • Könnte ich mir deine Notizen zum Projekt ansehen?

Could I look at your project notes?

Deine means informal singular “your.” Sich etwas ansehen means “to look at something”; with ich, use mir.

  • Könntest du mir deine Bücherliste zeigen?

Could you show me your book list?

Use könntest du with your child or someone you know well. Mir means “to me.”

  • Könnte ich mir deinen Bleistift ausleihen?

    Could I borrow your pencil?

Mir etwas ausleihen means “to borrow something.” Use deinen because Bleistift is masculine and is the direct object.

  • Könntest du den Buchtitel aufschreiben?

Could you write down the book title?

Aufschreiben means “to write down.” After könntest, it stays together as an infinitive.

  • Entschuldigung, könnten Sie meinem Kind helfen, ein Buch über das Weltall zu finden?

Excuse me, could you help my child find a book about space?

Use formal Sie with library staff. Helfen takes the dative: meinem Kind. The added task is expressed with zu finden.

  • Könnten Sie uns bitte die Ausleihregeln erklären?

Could you explain the borrowing rules to us, please?

Uns means “to us” here. Bitte adds “please” to this formal request.

  • Könnte ich diesen Computer für unsere Suche benutzen?

Could I use this computer for our search?

Use diesen because Computer is masculine and is the direct object. Für unsere Suche means “for our search.”

  • Könntest du diese Bücher tragen?

    Could you carry these books?

Diese Bücher means “these books.” This is a polite request to your child or another familiar person.

Choose the right polite form

Könnte is a Konjunktiv II form of können. In requests, it means “could” and sounds less direct than “can.” The ending changes with the subject.

UseFormExample
Ask permission for yourselfKönnte ich + … + infinitive?Könnte ich diesen Computer benutzen?
Ask one familiar personKönntest du + … + infinitive?Könntest du diese Bücher tragen?
Ask someone formallyKönnten Sie + … + infinitive?Könnten Sie uns helfen?

Put the infinitive at the end

Start the question with the form of könnte, then the subject. Put the main action in the infinitive at the end of that clause, without zu. Separable verbs such as aufschreiben stay together.

UseFormExample
Simple infinitiveKönntest du + mir deine Bücherliste + zeigen?Könntest du mir deine Bücherliste zeigen?
Separable verbKönntest du + den Buchtitel + aufschreiben?Könntest du den Buchtitel aufschreiben?
Add a task after helfenKönnten Sie + jemandem + helfen, … zu finden?Könnten Sie meinem Kind helfen, ein Buch zu finden?

Make requests friendly and respectful

Use du with your child and familiar people. Use Sie with adult library staff unless they invite you to use du. Formal Sie is always capitalized. Add bitte for “please” or Entschuldigung to get someone's attention politely.

UseFormExample
Add pleaseKönntest du bitte + … + infinitive?Könntest du bitte diese Bücher tragen?
