German phrases for books to take home

Could I borrow this book for my child?
Könnte ich makes the request polite. The infinitive ausleihen goes at the end.
Könnte ich einen Bibliotheksausweis für meine Tochter bekommen?
Could I get a library card for my daughter?
Use einen with Bibliotheksausweis because it is masculine and the direct object.
Könnte ich dieses Buch bis Freitag behalten?
Could I keep this book until Friday?
Bis Freitag means 'until Friday'. Behalten means 'to keep'.
Könntest du bitte deine Bücher tragen?
Could you carry your books, please?
Use du with your child. Bitte adds 'please' to this gentle request.

Could you choose a story for tonight?
Für heute Abend means 'for tonight'. Aussuchen stays together as an infinitive.

Mir means 'to me'. Deinen Bibliotheksausweis is the thing being shown.
Entschuldigung, könnten Sie meinem Sohn helfen, ein Buch über Tiere zu finden?

Entschuldigung, könnten Sie uns die Ausleihregeln erklären?

Uns means 'to us' here. Erklären is the infinitive at the end.

Polite requests with könnte
Könnte is a Konjunktiv II form of können. In requests, it means 'could' and sounds gentler than kann. Start the question with the form that matches the person, then add the subject. Put the main verb in the infinitive at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ask for yourself | Könnte ich + … + infinitive? | Könnte ich dieses Buch ausleihen? |
| Ask your child | Könntest du + … + infinitive? | Könntest du deine Bücher tragen? |
| Ask library staff | Könnten Sie + … + infinitive? | Könnten Sie uns die Ausleihregeln erklären? |
Choosing du or Sie
Use du with your child or someone you know well. Use Sie as a polite default with adult library staff you do not know. Formal Sie always has a capital S.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Informal | du → könntest | Könntest du mir deinen Bibliotheksausweis zeigen? |
| Formal | Sie → könnten | Entschuldigung, könnten Sie mir helfen? |
Infinitives and small politeness words
The infinitive directly linked to könnte has no zu. Bitte makes a request warmer, and Entschuldigung politely gets attention. With helfen, a longer phrase explaining the task can use zu plus an infinitive.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No zu after könnte | könnte + ausleihen | Könnte ich dieses Buch ausleihen? |
| Add please | Könntest du bitte + … + infinitive? | Könntest du bitte eine Geschichte aussuchen? |
| Explain the task after helfen | helfen, … zu finden | Könnten Sie meinem Sohn helfen, ein Buch zu finden? |
