What We Did in German
Celebrate your child's small sporting adventures using the Perfekt, the usual tense for talking about completed events in everyday German. Practise separable verbs such as mitmachen, aufbauen, umfallen and aufstehen.
What you'll learn
- Talk about activities you and your child finished today.
- Place ge- between a separable prefix and the verb stem when forming a past participle.
- Use haben or sein with the past participle.
- Put the past participle at the end of a simple statement.

Put ge- inside the participle
For these separable verbs, ge- goes after the prefix. Write the participle as one word. Regular participles end in -t; strong verbs often end in -en. Some verbs also change their stem.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| mitmachen | mit + ge + macht → mitgemacht | Du hast mitgemacht. |
| aufbauen | auf + ge + baut → aufgebaut | Wir haben das Tor aufgebaut. |
| umfallen | um + ge + fallen → umgefallen | Das Tor ist umgefallen. |
| aufstehen | auf + ge + standen → aufgestanden | Du bist wieder aufgestanden. |
| mitbringen | mit + ge + bracht → mitgebracht | Dein Freund hat einen Ball mitgebracht. |
Choose haben or sein
Most verbs here use haben. Umfallen and aufstehen use sein because they describe a change of state or position. Change haben or sein to match the subject; the participle stays the same.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| haben | ich habe, du hast, er/sie/es hat, wir haben + participle | Ich habe dich abgeholt. |
| sein | ich bin, du bist, er/sie/es ist, wir sind + participle | Du bist aufgestanden. |
Perfekt word order
In a simple statement, the conjugated form of haben or sein is in second position. The past participle goes at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject first | subject + haben/sein + other information + participle | Wir haben zusammen das kleine Tor aufgebaut. |
| Time first | time expression + haben/sein + subject + other information + participle | Heute hast du im Sportverein mitgemacht. |
