Our Club Challenge in German
Talk with your child about what they tried and achieved with their group. These phrases use the Perfekt, the usual tense for talking about past events in spoken German.
What you'll learn
- Recall shared activities and celebrate your child's participation.
- Form past participles of separable-prefix verbs with ge- between the prefix and the verb stem.
- Use haben or sein with the correct past participle.

For most separable-prefix verbs, ge- goes between the prefix and the verb stem. Regular participles end in -t. Some irregular verbs change their stem or end in -en. The participle stays together as one word.

Choose haben or sein
Most verbs in this guide use haben. Umfallen and aufstehen use sein because they describe a change of position. Learn the helper verb together with each participle.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| With haben | ich habe; du hast; er/sie hat; wir haben | Wir haben zusammen aufgeräumt. |
| With sein | ich bin; du bist; er/sie ist; wir sind | Du bist früh aufgestanden. |
Put the participle at the end
In a simple statement, the helper verb is in the second position. The past participle goes at the end.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | subject + helper verb + other information + participle | Du hast beim Mannschaftsspiel mitgemacht. |
| With a time phrase | subject + helper verb + object + time phrase + participle | Ich habe dich nach der Gruppenstunde abgeholt. |
