Choosing the polite request form
Könnte is a Konjunktiv II form of können. In these questions it means “could” and makes a request sound gentle. Choose the form to match the person.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Asking for yourself | Könnte ich … + infinitive? | Könnte ich einen Bibliotheksausweis bekommen? |
| Asking someone familiar | Könntest du … + infinitive? | Könntest du mir den Titel vorlesen? |
| Asking staff politely | Könnten Sie … + infinitive? | Könnten Sie uns die Kinderbücher zeigen? |
| Asking for your group | Könnten wir … + infinitive? | Könnten wir dieses Buch ausleihen? |
Building the question
Put könnte, könntest or könnten first, followed by the subject. Put the main infinitive at the end of the request clause, without zu. You can add bitte for “please.” With two actions, join the infinitives with und.
