The toy repair workshop in German
Tell a calm story about repairing a toy. Use konnte to describe what someone could or could not do, and musste to explain what had to happen.

German phrases for the toy repair workshop
Das kleine Auto konnte nicht fahren.
The little car could not move.
Konnte nicht describes something the car was unable to do. Fahren is the natural action verb for a car.
Wir mussten die Räder prüfen.
We had to check the wheels.
With wir, use mussten. The action verb prüfen comes at the end.
Ich konnte den Batteriedeckel nicht öffnen.
I could not open the battery cover.
Ich konnte ... nicht öffnen means that opening it was not possible.
Papa musste einen kleinen Schraubendreher benutzen.
Dad had to use a small screwdriver.
Musste describes a necessary action in the past; benutzen stays in the infinitive.
Du konntest die Taschenlampe für mich halten.
You could hold the torch for me.
Here, 'could' means you were able to do this in the past, not a request. With du, use konntest.
Wir mussten eine neue Batterie finden.
We had to find a new battery.
Mussten ... finden means 'had to find'.
Ich konnte das Rad nach der Reparatur drehen.
I could turn the wheel after the repair.
Konnte describes what was possible after the repair. Drehen comes at the end.
Der Kleber musste trocknen, bevor wir spielen konnten.
The glue had to dry before we could play.
Musste trocknen means 'had to dry'. In the final clause, the modal follows the infinitive: spielen konnten.

Past necessity: musste
Use the Präteritum of müssen for 'had to': something was necessary in the past. These forms also have no umlaut.

Modal verb plus infinitive
In a main clause, the past modal takes the second position and the action verb goes at the end in its infinitive form, without zu. Only the modal changes to match the subject.

Musstest is the du form; halten stays at the end.

Nach der Reparatur konnte das Auto wieder fahren.
After the repair, the car could move again.
Konnte ... fahren describes the successful result.
