Joining a new playgroup in German

Use simple wenn (“if”) sentences to reassure your child in a new playgroup. State a possible situation first, then explain the support or choice available.

What you'll learn

  • Offer reassuring choices and promises with wenn.
  • Put the conjugated verb at the end of the wenn clause.
  • Start the following main clause with its conjugated verb.

German phrases for joining a new playgroup

  • Wenn du schüchtern bist, bleibe ich neben dir.

If you feel shy, I will stay beside you.

Bist ends the wenn clause; bleibe starts the main clause. The German present tense expresses the promise naturally.

  • Wenn du zuschauen möchtest, können wir hier warten.

If you want to watch, we can wait here.

Möchtest comes last in the wenn clause, after zuschauen.

  • Wenn jemand Hallo sagt, kannst du winken.

If someone says hello, you can wave.

Sagt ends the condition; kannst comes immediately after the comma.

  • Wenn du Hilfe brauchst, kannst du mich rufen.

If you need help, you can call me.

Mich rufen means calling out to get your attention here.

  • Wenn es im Raum zu laut ist, können wir nach draußen gehen.

If the room is too noisy, we can go outside.

Ist ends the wenn clause; können starts the main clause.

  • Wenn du das Spiel magst, kannst du mitmachen.

If you like the game, you can join in.

Mitmachen means joining in an activity.

  • Wenn du eine Pause möchtest, ist dieser Stuhl frei.

If you want a break, this chair is free.

The main clause starts with ist, followed by dieser Stuhl.

  • Wenn du bereit bist, können wir die Gruppenleitung kennenlernen.

If you are ready, we can meet the group leader.

Die Gruppenleitung refers to the person leading the group without specifying their gender.

Wenn introduces the condition

Here, wenn means “if” and introduces a possible situation. Put the conjugated verb at the end of this clause. Separate it from the main clause with a comma.

UseFormExample
One verbwenn + subject + other words + conjugated verbWenn du Hilfe brauchst, kannst du mich rufen.
With möchtestwenn + subject + infinitive + möchtestWenn du zuschauen möchtest, können wir hier warten.

After the condition: verb before subject

When the wenn clause comes first, start the main clause immediately with its conjugated verb, then its subject. The whole wenn clause fills the first position of the sentence, so this still follows German verb-second order overall.

UseFormExample
A promiseWenn …, bleibe ich …Wenn du schüchtern bist, bleibe ich neben dir.
A choiceWenn …, kannst du …Wenn jemand Hallo sagt, kannst du winken.
An available placeWenn …, ist dieser Stuhl …Wenn du eine Pause möchtest, ist dieser Stuhl frei.

Present tense for realistic support

Use present-tense forms for these real, possible situations and their results. German also naturally uses the present tense for a promise that English may express with “will.”

UseFormExample
Present-tense promiseWenn + present tense, present tenseWenn du schüchtern bist, bleibe ich neben dir.
