Looking through family photos in German

Use family photos to remember visits, discoveries and little adventures. Practise eight Perfekt participles whose inseparable prefixes mean they do not take ge-.

German phrases for looking through family photos

  • Wir haben Tante in ihrer neuen Wohnung besucht.

    We visited Auntie in her new flat.

    besuchen → besucht: keep be- and do not add ge-.

  • Du hast an dem Tag ein kleines Päckchen bekommen.

    You got a little parcel that day.

    bekommen → bekommen: the participle looks exactly like the infinitive.

  • Wir haben neben dem Tor eine Schnecke entdeckt.

    We discovered a snail beside the gate.

    entdecken → entdeckt: keep ent- and do not add ge-.

  • Opa hat uns eine lustige Geschichte erzählt.

    Grandad told us a funny story.

    erzählen → erzählt: no ge- after or before er-.

  • Mama hat uns das Spiel erklärt.

    Mum explained the game to us.

    erklären → erklärt: keep er- and use the ending -t.

  • Ich habe dich sofort erkannt.

    I recognised you straight away.

    erkennen → erkannt: the stem changes, but there is still no ge-.

  • Wir haben bei dem Ausflug die Kamera vergessen.

    We forgot the camera on that trip.

    vergessen → vergessen: the participle looks exactly like the infinitive.

  • Du hast deinen Sonnenhut am Strand verloren.

    You lost your sun hat at the beach.

    verlieren → verloren: learn the changed stem and the ending -en together.

In these verbs, be-, ent-, er- and ver- stay attached to the verb. Their Perfekt participles do not add ge- anywhere. The four regular verbs below end in -t.

Learn these participle forms as a set

The no-ge- rule also applies when a verb has an irregular participle. Bekommen and vergessen look unchanged. Erkennen becomes erkannt, while verlieren becomes verloren. Learn each complete form rather than just removing -en.

Repeat besucht without adding ge-.

Bekommen is also the participle form.

Was haben wir entdeckt? – Eine Schnecke!

What did we discover? – A snail!

Entdeckt keeps ent- and ends in -t.

Hast du mich erkannt? – Ja, sofort!

Did you recognise me? – Yes, straight away!

Use erkannt, not erkennt, as the participle.
