- Use vor to describe completed events in the past.
- Use dative time expressions such as einer Stunde, einem Jahr and zwei Tagen.
German phrases for since then and a while ago
Wir sind seit einer Stunde hier.
We have been here for an hour.
We are still here, so German uses seit with the present tense: sind.
Ich habe diesen Teddy seit Montag.
I have had this teddy since Monday.
The possession continues now: use present-tense habe. Seit Montag gives the starting point.
Sie geht seit einer Woche in die Kita.
She has been at nursery for a week.
This naturally means she started attending nursery a week ago and still attends.
Es regnet seit heute Morgen.
It has been raining since this morning.
The rain is still continuing. Seit heute Morgen gives the starting point.
Wir sind vor zehn Minuten angekommen.
We arrived ten minutes ago.
Vor zehn Minuten tells us how long ago the arrival happened.
Opa hat uns vor zwei Tagen besucht.
Grandad visited us two days ago.
Vor marks a completed past event. Tage becomes Tagen in the dative plural.
Ich habe vor einer Stunde eine Banane gegessen.
I ate a banana an hour ago.
Vor einer Stunde means an hour ago, not for an hour.
Wir haben diesen Buggy vor einem Jahr gekauft.
We bought this buggy a year ago.
Use vor for the completed purchase. Das Jahr becomes einem Jahr after vor.

Use seit with the present tense when a situation began in the past and continues now. English often uses “have been” or “have had.” Seit can introduce either a duration (“for”) or a starting point (“since”).
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | seit + dative duration + present tense | Wir sind seit einer Stunde hier. — We have been here for an hour. |
| Starting point | seit + starting point + present tense | Ich habe diesen Teddy seit Montag. — I have had this teddy since Monday. |
| Since this morning | seit heute Morgen | Es regnet seit heute Morgen. — It has been raining since this morning. |
Vor: how long ago?
Use vor with a dative duration to place a completed event in the past. It corresponds to English “ago.” The event is expressed in the past tense.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes ago | vor + number + Minuten | Wir sind vor zehn Minuten angekommen. — We arrived ten minutes ago. |
| A year ago | vor einem Jahr | Wir haben diesen Buggy vor einem Jahr gekauft. — We bought this buggy a year ago. |
Dative forms after seit and vor
Both prepositions take the dative. With a singular time noun, use einer for feminine nouns and einem for masculine or neuter nouns. Dative plurals usually add -n if the plural does not already end in -n or -s. Fixed expressions such as seit heute Morgen have no visible dative ending.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Feminine | eine Stunde → einer Stunde | seit einer Stunde — for an hour; vor einer Stunde — an hour ago |
| Masculine | ein Tag → einem Tag | seit einem Tag — for a day; vor einem Tag — a day ago |
| Neuter | ein Jahr → einem Jahr | seit einem Jahr — for a year; vor einem Jahr — a year ago |
| Plural: add -n | zwei Tage → zwei Tagen | vor zwei Tagen — two days ago |
| Plural: already ends in -n | zehn Minuten → zehn Minuten | vor zehn Minuten — ten minutes ago |
