  • Use vor to say when a completed past event happened.
  • Use dative forms in time expressions with seit and vor.

Seit + dative: still true now

Use seit with a duration or a starting point. For situations that are still continuing, German uses the present tense where English often uses have been or have had.

UseFormExample
Masculine durationseit einem MonatDu bist seit einem Monat im Schachclub.
Neuter durationseit einem JahrDu hast dieses Fahrrad seit einem Jahr.
Feminine durationseit einer WocheDu kennst Mia seit einer Woche.

Vor + dative: how long ago

Put vor before the time expression, unlike English ago, which comes after it. For these completed events, use the conversational past tense: haben or sein plus a past participle at the end. Both vor and seit take einem with masculine or neuter nouns and einer with feminine nouns.
