German phrases for step by step

  • Zuerst räumst du deine Schulsachen weg.

    First, you put your school things away.

    Wegräumen means to put away. Its prefix weg goes at the end.

  • Dann essen wir zusammen eine Kleinigkeit.

    Then, we have a snack together.

    Eine Kleinigkeit essen is a natural way to say 'have a snack.'

  • Danach arbeitest du an deinem Projekt.

    After that, you work on your project.

    Use an + dative for working on something: an deinem Projekt.

  • Zum Schluss rufst du deinen Freund an.

    Finally, you call your friend.

    Anrufen means to call by phone. For a female friend, use deine Freundin.

  • Zuerst schreiben wir eine Liste mit Aufgaben für den Haushalt.

    First, we write a list of chores.

    Aufgaben für den Haushalt means household tasks or chores.

  • Dann wählst du zwei Aufgaben aus.

    Then, you choose two jobs.

    Aufgaben means tasks here, not paid jobs. Auswählen means to choose.

  • Danach räumen wir zusammen die Küche auf.

    After that, we tidy the kitchen together.

    Aufräumen means to tidy up. Its prefix auf goes at the end.

  • Zum Schluss spielen wir ein Brettspiel.

    Finally, we play a board game.

    Zum Schluss introduces the last activity in the plan.

Sequencing expressions and verb-second order

When a sequencing expression starts a statement, the conjugated verb comes next, followed by the subject. Zum Schluss has two words but counts as one sentence element. Do not add a comma after these expressions.

Separable verbs in the plan

With separable verbs, the conjugated part stays in second position and the prefix goes at the end of these statements.

Moving zum Schluss to the front puts the subject wir after the verb spielen.
