Afternoon Step Together in German

Build a calm afternoon routine with learning and play. Use zuerst, dann, danach and zum Schluss to show the order of activities.

German phrases for afternoon step together

  • Zuerst räumen wir deine Schultasche weg.

    First, we put your school bag away.

    Wegräumen means 'to put away.' Its prefix weg goes at the end.

  • Dann isst du einen kleinen Snack.

    Then, you eat a small snack.

    With du, essen becomes isst.

  • Danach schauen wir uns deine Hausaufgaben an.

    After that, we look at your homework.

    Sich etwas anschauen means 'to look at something.' With wir, use uns; an goes at the end.

  • Zum Schluss spielst du im Garten.

    Finally, you play in the garden.

    Im Garten means 'in the garden.' Im is short for in dem.

  • Zuerst suchst du dir ein Buch zum Lesen aus.

    First, you choose a reading book.

    Du suchst dir ... aus means 'you choose ... for yourself.' Ein Buch zum Lesen is a book to read.

  • Dann lese ich die erste Seite.

    Then, I read the first page.

    Die erste Seite means 'the first page.' With ich, lesen becomes lese.

  • Danach liest du mir eine Seite vor.

    After that, you read a page to me.

    Vorlesen means 'to read aloud.' Mir means 'to me'; vor goes at the end.

  • Zum Schluss packen wir deine Tasche für morgen.

    Finally, we pack your bag for tomorrow.

    Für morgen means 'for tomorrow.' Morgen has a lowercase m when it means 'tomorrow.'

Sequencing expressions and verb-second order

When a sequencing expression starts a statement, the conjugated verb comes next, followed by the subject. Zum Schluss contains two words but fills one position. Do not put a comma after these opening expressions.

Separable verbs in routine statements

Some German verbs have a separable prefix. In these present-tense statements, the conjugated part takes second position and the prefix goes at the end.

Zuerst essen wir einen Snack. Dann lesen wir zusammen.

First, we eat a snack. Then, we read together.

In both statements, the verb comes immediately after the sequencing word.

Danach spielst du im Garten. Zum Schluss packen wir deine Schultasche.

After that, you play in the garden. Finally, we pack your school bag.

The subject follows the verb: spielst du and packen wir.
