Words that make the sequence clear
Use zuerst for the first step, dann or danach for a following step, and zum Schluss for the final step. Dann and danach often overlap in meaning.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First | zuerst | Zuerst drehe ich die Sanduhr um. |
| Then | dann | Dann hast du den Kran für zwei Minuten. |
| After that | danach | Danach ist deine Schwester dran. |
| Finally / at the end | zum Schluss | Zum Schluss parken wir beide Lastwagen zusammen. |
Sequencing expression first, conjugated verb second
When a sequencing expression starts the sentence, put the conjugated verb next and the subject after it. 'Second position' means the second sentence element, not necessarily the second word. Do not add a comma after these expressions.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Sequencing expression + conjugated verb + subject + rest | Dann bekommst du den Kran zurück. |
| A longer subject | Danach + ist + deine Schwester + rest | Danach ist deine Schwester dran. |
| Two-word sequencing expression | Zum Schluss + parken + wir + rest | Zum Schluss parken wir beide Lastwagen zusammen. |
| With kannst | Danach + kannst + du + rest | Danach kannst du ein anderes Spielzeug aussuchen. |
