Commands for several children: ihr

Use the present-tense ihr verb form, normally without ihr. This works for two or more people you address informally. You can name the audience first: Kinder, alle or ihr beiden.

UseFormExample
kommenihr kommt → kommtKinder, kommt ein bisschen näher.
haltenihr haltet → haltetKinder, haltet eure Eintrittskarten hoch.
winkenihr winkt → winktIhr beiden, winkt dem Drachen.
klatschenihr klatscht → klatschtKinder, klatscht für die mutige Maus.

Polite commands for adult guests: Sie

For polite commands, put the verb before Sie and always include Sie with a capital S. This form can address one adult or several adults formally. Bitte can go before the verb or after Sie.

UseFormExample
Welcome a guestBitte + kommen + Sie + …Bitte kommen Sie herein, Frau Green.
Offer a seatBitte + nehmen + Sie + …Bitte nehmen Sie diesen Platz, Herr Brown.
Ask someone to waitwarten + Sie + bitte + …Warten Sie bitte einen Moment, Frau Green.

Commands with a separated verb part

In commands such as zuhören, hochhalten and hereinkommen, the short verb part goes at the end of the instruction. The command still uses either the ihr form without ihr or the polite verb + Sie pattern.

UseFormExample
Listenzuhören → hört … zuAlle, hört der kleinen Puppe zu.
Hold uphochhalten → haltet … hochKinder, haltet eure Eintrittskarten hoch.
Come in politelyhereinkommen → kommen Sie … hereinBitte kommen Sie herein, Frau Green.
